The next night Jennie sat with Chaerin by the fire as Jiyong nursed a headache in bed. They mostly sat in silence while Jennie read The Princess Bride, another comfort book, with her little flashlight, and Chaerin flipped through magazines and sporadically poked at the fire.
Finally Chaerin broke the silence. "So," she said. "How about Jisoo..."
It was the most open-ended question slash statement Jennie could have imagined. Her mother's tactics for prying for information were far from discreet.
She couldn't help but chuckle. "How about her indeed." She didn't look up from her book.
Chaerin heaved her shoulders in frustration. "Come on, Jen! I'm your mother! You can tell me."
"Tell you what?" Jennie teased.
"Details! Details!"
Jennie laughed, finally giving in. "I'm not sure what you want to know, but," she paused, "I like her."
"Well duh." said Chaerin, exasperated. "Does she like you too?"
"I think she does." Jennie said with a smirk.
Chaerin clapped her hands and squealed. "I remember you two as kids, always fighting, but always making up and playing like nothing happened. Do you remember when you hit her.."
"Yes. Mom! And if I didn't remember, there's a scar to remind me."
No!" Chaerin gasped. "That is so cute. Do you remember the time you were scared by the fireworks? You couldn't have been more than five or six, and Jisoo was about eight. You ran to hide in the boathouse and she went to get you. I'll never forget the image of her leading you down the stairs by the hand, and sitting with you at the end of the dock. I never told you, but Jisoo's mom and I sneaked inside the boathouse to listen to you two. Jisoo was reassuring you, telling you not to be afraid." She sighed loudly, positively swooning over the memory.
Jennie was flushed and about to burst. "I don't remember that."
"Oh my gosh. I can't believe you don't remember. Sandara and I almost died when she started singing you Brave Brave Kitten. You loved that song."
"She can still sing," Jennie's skin was now covered in goosebumps.
"Well." Chaerin sat back in her chair, "just be careful, hun. You were hurt so recently..."
"Mom, I'm well aware." Jennie defended. "But keep in mind that Taehyung and I were over long before I left."
"Right. I know you're a smart girl. I just don't want to see you plastered all over the tabloids in a love triangle."
"Liar. You love that stuff."
"Not when it's my daughter," Chaerin glared over her reading glasses. "And your father... he worries. That's all."
"I know." Jennie gave her mother a reassuring smile. "Enough about this.” She gestured to the magazine in her mother's lap. "Tell me who's in rehab."

Jisoo pulled into the underground parking garage of her apartment building and slid into her spot. She turned off the engine and sat quietly for a moment. Her meeting with the record executives had gone well, and she needed time to process what had happened.
As soon as ahe shook their hands and sat down at the massive oval conference table, they were pressing play on the YouTube video of her karaoke performance on a giant wall mounted screen. Jisoo sunk back a little in her chair. She wasn't used to seeing herself on display like that, having always been on the production side of the business, not in the spotlight.
