Warning for descriptions of a creepy ass character and blood
Dandelion trotted calmly through the woods which were rapidly darkening again. Fwhip and Gem had finally allowed him to leave with the gunpowder he needed and a promise to bring Fwhip plenty of wool on his next visit. The cold November winds made the naked tree branches shudder above him and it stung his face and hands, though to him it looked like it would calm down as night fell.
He was right, and the harsh wind died down, replacing its noise and rustling with deafening silence and a weighty feeling of dread. Usually, that feeling would mean that there was something evil nearby, but Sausage couldn't see anything between the trees and based on how nervous Dandelion became suddenly, she could feel it too. Then she came to a stop with her ears pressed flat against the back of her neck and refused to move. Her eyes were wide as they stared around, and Sausage tried to follow her gaze.
"What's wrong Dandelion?" he muttered soothingly to her as dread and paranoia flooded his heart and mind.
He managed to figure out where she was looking, it was to the left of the path past gigantic prints in the snow made by something with gigantic, cloven hooves. There was something there, a thing that moved in the darkness like the shadow of something horrible in flickering firelight. He strained his eyes to see better, and somewhere behind the tall birches there was something that might once have been a deer, or pretended to be. Only that it was far too big, far too dark, it stood on two legs and cracks in its matted fur revealed deep red light within that danced like a flame. Then its head became visible as it lowered itself slightly and stared back at him.
Another person would have thought it was the empty eyesockets of a long dead deer skull that was still attached to the rest of the body by rotting pieces of skin and flesh, but Sausage saw more, and this was definitely one of those times that he cursed his ability to see things for what they really were. Whatever this was, he could feel had once been somewhat human. Almost as human as he was, he thought. But now, it was certainly not and the empty eyesockets were not empty. Something, or someone, stared through them and through his body and soul with a burning, fierce gaze.
Then, Dandelion reared with a horrified neighing and Sausage barely managed to hold on as she bolted forwards as fast as her legs would carry her. He knew there was no point in trying to make her stop even though he wanted to go back to see what it was. Dandelion ran and ran in blind panic until she jumped over a rock wall and landed in one of Mythland's huge wheat fields. Then she stood still and panted for air, still staring anxiously into the dark forest outside, but as Sausage looked, he saw nothing looking back.
He sighed slightly disappointedly as Dandelion trotted towards the stables tiredly, he had never seen any monster that looked like that before, neither with his dhampir senses or in books. He locked Dandelion in the stable and started walking to the castle, his thoughts still caught on whatever that thing was.
He stretched out in bed and his thoughts were quickly drawn away from the monster and to Scott. The thought of him made his heart beat a little faster, and the confused and slightly panicked feelings returned. What the actual hell was he? Sausage had never come across anyone or anything that could mess with his powers like this before, or make him feel so... weird.
He didn't have time to think more about Scott though, because a loud scraping noise on the ceiling made him sit bolt upright. The feeling of dread and anxiety crept back on him as the scraping and loud thumping continued. A deep, hoarse, horrible growl reached his ears as the noise of something on the roof moved slowly over his head. He turned around to stare out of the window, but there was nothing there.
Then, something dropped down and stared into Sausage's soul with burning red eyes. It was a lot bigger than it had looked from a distance, he thought it could have picked up a carthorse and thrown it if it wanted to. Black matted fur hung around its body and the white skull glared at him as it opened its mouth to let out a horrible sound that made the window panes rattle. Enormous claws scraped against the glass and Sausage was frozen to the spot, feeling almost hypnotised by its terrifying gaze.
