September 21st
Dear boy in history class,
I was volunteering at the assistant care living facility today, and I saw you telling a beautiful and animated story to a man that had Alzheimer's. I know that man. He used to go to my grandparents house ever Wednesday night before they went out for supper. Two darling grandbabies born a few months ago and every time they visit he has to struggle to remember their names. I can never miss the tears in his eyes as he strains his memory that just doesn't exist any more. Seeing that man grin as he follows your tale reminds me why I started to volunteer in the first place; to bring joy to people that need it. And I saw the satisfied grin on your face when you realized how happy you made him. Your smile is contagious to me. I saw it and I haven't stopped grinning since.
The girl two rows back.
