The rest of the ride was uneventful. Gustav and his brother left Astrid and Estrella alone; Mrs. Larson focused on steering, although to Estrella, even though she had never sailed before, it seemed like she was purposefully overcorrecting so she'd have something to do.

The ships sailed through the fog, and it was completely silent except for vikings periodically muttering to each other and old, unused sails and boats creaking.

Estrella was anxious and jumpy by the time the vikings called up a joyous cry. Her head went up, looking for danger, but all she saw was the island ahead of them.

The vikings on the ships were cheering and hollering, and, attracted by the noise, the stranded vikings gathered on the banks and yelled back, waving frantically.

Estrella turned and met Astrid's eyes. Her mouth opened into a huge grin.

Astrid's grin stretched from ear to ear. "We did it," she whispered to Estrella. "We really did it!"

Estrella wished she could do more than match Astrid's smile and nod happily. She had been sitting down, but she now got to her feet and watched as the vikings pulled up.

Everyone was talking. There was so much noise. Questions and exclamations swirled around Estrella. She waited until the vikings began their hugs and tears and mingling before leaping over their heads and landing next to Toothless.

Toothless watched the vikings in their joyous reunitings. He dipped his head to brush his chin with the top of Estrella's face.

"See?" Estrella said proudly. "I told you I'd be careful."

"You succeeded," Toothless pointed out. "I still don't know if you were careful or not."

Estrella rolled her eyes. "I was careful enough," she promised. "I stayed in dragon form the whole time." She pulled away, studying him. "How are you feeling?"

"Ready to get away from this place," Toothless admitted, turning to gaze at the ever-there carcass of the Red Death.

Estrella hesitated. "Once he wakes up... Should I tell Hiccup about what happened between you and that dragon?"

Toothless dropped his gaze. "Not yet," he said. "Not yet."

"Everyone!" Stoick called out, standing on a large lava-rock boulder. "Attention, please!"

The Berkians quieted and turned happily toward their chief.

"All right," Stoick said. "I imagine we're all ready to sail away from this place and never come back. I am too. However, a couple of matters of importance must be addressed before that happens.

"First of all, I would like to express, on behalf of, I'm sure, all vikings gathered here today, the deep and intense gratitude for Astrid and Estrella."

Even though she was still in dragon form, Estrella's face got hot as everyone turned to look at them. She fought the urge to avert her gaze, but kept it high and proud. Astrid stood beside her, face beet-red, but eyes alight with excitement.
