I clear my throat. "You'll be happy to know that I have a new job." I answer his previous question.

"Is that so? And what's this new job? What are you going to be doing hmm?" He eyes me bemused. He hands me a red solo cup with what smells like tequila. I immediately chug it. I have to man up.

I can't lie my way out of this one. He knows. "There's a man who offered me a position to work for him."

Damion raises a brow and settles for crossing his arms on his chest. If he's aiming for intimidation it's working.

"A spy?" I nod my head quickly as he tests the words out assessing them and me.

I can't read how he's processing my news. Unease sweeps over me and I begin to doubt whether I should tell him the complete truth.

He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. "Adina you shouldn't work under the wing of Maqueuly. He's a dangerous man, he has no mercy for anyone, that includes his own blood."

I inhale sharply, surprised that I'm being scolded by Damion. "Do you know he's given me the one thing no one else has at this point? He's given me information on my mom Damion! He knows who murdered her and he isn't bluffing. I could read it clear as day in his eyes, he knows the name of the man who killed her."

Damion knows of my past and the reason why I began to train with Wez. He knows about my mom and what this position would mean to me. I'd give everything up to come face to face with the man who was heartless enough to murder an individual as precious as my mom.

One of the things about Damion is that he always has my back regardless of the situation.
Occasionally Damion will engage any speculations he might have in regards to my safety and address matters personally with Wez or Dan. Despite leaving the group I couldn't be more grateful to have Dan watching my back and harassing Damion for information of my health and safety.
Damion and I meet up once every two weeks for sparring sessions in his mansion home. Damion even enrolled in my school and he's taking most of the same classes as me.

These last few days I hadn't bumped into him since he was training hard for the school's final playoff which was going to happen a day before graduation. Evan's football team was determined to win at all costs. It meant that Evan was pulling his team meetings after school and during breaks.

"Don't say anything to Wezley, at least not yet. Let me handle this for now and if something new comes up I'll contact you immediately." I try a new tactic of negotiation wondering if I can persuade Damion long enough for me to accept Maqueuly's proposal without him stopping me.

"You're skating on thin ice here and it will cost you your life Adina. I know you want to avenge your mother's killer but at the expense of endangering your own life? This is ridiculous." His words suddenly falter my plans for a second and I'm hesitant to express how I feel. He knows how important this is for me.

"It probably sounds messed up to you but this is something that I can do easily and I'm not really losing anything."

"Actually if he double crosses you then you do have a lot to lose. Wez won't be happy when he hears all of this mess your involved in. Maqueuly is someone who can't be trusted."

"Wez and you aren't responsible for me anymore. I walked away in case you didn't know and I'm old enough now to make decisions where I don't have to be asking for permission all the time. You guys need to back off. I know you care and I appreciate that because no one has ever really done that for me but I believe I can handle Maqueuly on my own."

The brutal reality of my words sink in, even to me as I realize that I've always secretly relied on Wez to have my back through the good and the bad.
Damion's frame stiffens and his jaw is clenched tight as if he is struggling to control his barely visible anger that's flashing through his eyes.
