Chapter 23

On edge was an understatement. Airi was fucking terrified and paranoid.

After the boys had sleepily walked into their hotel rooms and collapsed on their respective beds, Airi unpacked and went to her room, reading the short email over and over again.

Coming for her? What did she do? Was it because she didn't participate in the elections? Because she left Hyakkao? What did that even mean? Kidnapping? Killing? Torture?

She wanted to say that she should just focus on the finals, but she knew how extreme her cousin was.

A knock at the door made her jump.

"Yes?"

"Yunabami, the meeting will be after dinner. Will you cook or should we all eat at the nearby ramen shop?"

"I can cook, coach."

"Okay."

She really did not want to go outside. Gathering herself, she typed out a reply to Terano.

Just got more details from your friend, Saotome. She heard them talking. It will happen after the winter cup finals and there will be a LOT of gambling. That's all she found out. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Airi let out a sigh of relief. She wouldn't be killed after all. Well, she didn't know that for sure but at least she would have some chance of escaping.

Sighing and stuffing her phone back into her pocket, she got up and decided to start cooking to clear her mind. Looking in the fridge, she decided to make chicken katsu curry since there wasn't a whole lot else she could make.

Time to get to work.

"Everyone understand?"

A chorus of agreement rang around the room and Eikichi let out a mighty belch. The coach sighed and left, disappearing behind his room door.

"Thanks for the food, Ri-chan."

"It was delicious!"

"Yeah thanks Ri!"

Soon, the rest disappeared back to their rooms except Akashi. He stared thoughtfully at his whiteboard while Airi watched him carefully.

"Aka- Sei-kun..."

The redhead turned to face her with a raised eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.

"You should go to sleep... It's already 11."

He turned away from her, returning to staring at the whiteboard in silence. Unsure of what that kind of response meant, she started clearing away the dishes and washing them. All the while, she observed the captain who was still standing in silence. Even after she was done, he was still thinking.

"Airi, let's play shogi."
