It turned out to be a pretty great birthday. Though that was kinda an understatement.

She woke up early in the morning with Kal deciding that they had really slept long enough and nuzzling his big, broad head against her arm until she finally succumbed to his begging and started to pet him. Henry was silently laughing behind her, the vibration of his ribcage, shaking her and she turned her head up so that she would get a good morning kiss.

And really, alone that, made her birthday utterly perfect.

There was something to say about being kissed silly while still half asleep and tucked underneath a warm and fluffy duvet...namely that it was pretty great.

Kal interrupted them with more instant whining and then it was a race to who got dressed quicker, though it was pretty easy to just throw on a pair of shorts and a shirt and call it a day if it meant that she could start her day with a stroll at the beach with her two boys.

And didn't she just adore that?

She did.

She was tucked underneath Henry's arms when they ambled back towards the house, the sun already having turned up and it was probably going to be warm enough for once that one wouldn't freeze in place if they decided to go swimming.

Summertime in Jersey. Was there something better than that?

Not as far as Delilah was concerned. Or Kal, who loved running around the beach and letting Delilah and Henry throw him his ball as often as they could, which he always brought back with a happily wagging tail and it never managed to make Delilah do anything other than smile. She threw the ball again, her hand slipping into Henry's and he pressed a kiss against the top of her head in response.

His phone pinged and she watched Kal go running into the water another time as Henry checked whatever was going on.

"Seems like your birthday surprise just showed up," he finally said and Delilah just sighed. "Shush, I didn't buy it for you," he teased her immediately.

Of course. She shouldn't have believed him when he said that her necklace was all he was giving her for her birthday. She knew Henry better than that.

"The same how you didn't buy my necklace but had it fixed?" She asked him drily and he just smiled at her.

"Something like that," he gave back easily.

The necklace was safely around her neck and Delilah knew now that she was never going to take it off again. It would stay there now. Safely and securely right there, the one connection to her Bubbe that would always stay.

A connection to her beliefs and her family history, a token of love and comfort.

And Delilah wouldn't want it any other way.

"Do I want to know what it is?" She asked Henry teasingly who just grinned at her.

"Oh, I think you will like it," he promised her earnestly and she believed that.

"So...can you close your eyes?" He asked her suddenly when they were just a few meters away from the backdoor and Delilah did as asked with a long-suffering sigh. He kept hold of her hand, gently steering her up the path to his parent's house. "Don't sneak a peek," he warned her and Delilah just snorted.

"I can behave," she gave back drily. "As long as you don't let me run smack-dab into something."

"I'll be careful, Princess," he promised her earnestly and so she let him lead her into the house, with him carefully telling her when there was a step or anything else that she could fall over.
