CHAPTER ONE

༺༻Laughter fills the air as the two little girls run through the kitchen, passing their mother who stands by the counter, preparing dinner. "Slow down, girls" The woman calls after the two, but being children, they don't listen.
The five-year-old girls run through the large house, one that held a secret, a secret their parents had warned them about countless times – the basement was strictly off-limits. But, as the whispers of childhood often do, the allure of the forbidden was too strong to resist.
While the mother called for her oldest child, Odessa and Olivia tiptoed down the creaky wooden stairs to the forbidden basement. The air grew colder, and the atmosphere heavier as they descended into the dimly lit abyss. The basement was a realm frozen in time, filled with dusty relics of the past.
To their amazement, the twins find an assortment of unfamiliar objects strung up on the wall at the end of the dusty room. Odessa's green eyes widened with wonder, and Olivia's curiosity piqued. Odessa steps forward, staring up at the guns and knives against the wall. Something in her rose and the temperature dropped, and a sudden sharp pain pierced through her head. It felt like a thousand needles pricking her brain.
She cried out, collapsing to her knees. The room seemed to spin, and her vision blurred. Olivia steps forward, calling out her sister's name, her voice filled with terror. Her sister screams and steps back quickly when she turns around, seeing the colour of her eyes turn completely black.
Her eyes closed for a second, but it felt like hours to Odessa. Her head throbbed when she gained consciousness again. She smelt it before her eyes opened, the strong scent of something unfamiliar. Her fingers were stiff, covered in a red substance that she instantly recognized as blood. She was covered in it.
Her trembling hands touched Olivia's still warm cheek and the sound of footsteps rushing down the stairs pulled her gaze away from her sister's empty eyes. Her mother's broken voice rang in her ears.
"What did you do?" The woman rushes to her daughter, tears falling down her face. "What did you do?!"
Odessa gasps.
She jerked upright in her bed, sweat clinging to her skin. Her heart pounded in her chest, the nightmare still fresh in her mind. A sharp, insistent knock echoed from her front door, pulling her from the remnants of the dream. Groaning, she glanced at her clock— 2:27 a.m.
Who the hell could be knocking at this hour?
Her hand instinctively reached for the gun in her nightstand drawer. She made her way cautiously to the door as the knocking grew louder, more impatient. She opened the door, gun in hand, and froze when she saw the two familiar faces standing there.
