The living room was a riot of color. Balloons floated near the ceiling, streamers hung from the walls, and soft fairy lights glimmered across the room. Teju, four months pregnant, stood precariously on the couch, reaching to stick another balloon on the wall. She froze when she heard the front door open, her heart skipping a beat.
Karan stepped in and froze mid-step, wide-eyed.
"What do you think you're doing, Tejasswi?" he asked, his voice tinged with mock alarm.
"Oh... hi! I... I'm decorating for you," she stammered, trying to sound casual.
He moved toward her carefully, making sure she was safe before speaking louder. "Get down from there!"
Teju grabbed his hand but then stepped down and launched herself into a hug. Karan gently held her at arm's length, slightly irritated but mostly relieved.
"Why were you decorating?" he asked, frowning.
"It's your birthday, my love," she said, eyes sparkling.
"I know that, but why were you doing it?"
"Who else would? I'm your wife, remember?" she teased.
"Don't be a smartmouth," he replied, exasperated. "There are so many people who could've helped. And do you realize you're carrying our child? You could've hurt yourself... or the baby!"
"Nothing happened, okay? Don't irritate me," she said lightly, sensing his rising irritation.
That wasn't the reaction he expected. Karan turned and walked away. Teju's heart sank. She ran after him, but he disappeared into the bathroom, locking the door.
She leaned against it, waiting. After a while, he emerged, ignoring her entirely, heading straight to the kitchen where the dining table was laden with his favorite foods. Teju followed, trying to hug him, but he gently pushed her away.
"Tejasswi, stop it, please," he said.
"Sunny... sorry, baby. I realized my mistake. Please forgive me," she pleaded, her voice soft and apologetic.
He sat on the couch, still silent. Teju kneeled beside him. "Please talk to me..."
Still nothing.
"I'm hungry... my baby is hungry too," she said, making the cutest pout, rubbing her belly gently. Karan's gaze softened, melting at the sight.
"It's our baby, not just yours," he said, rising and walking to the dining table.
"Oh... yes, our baby," she echoed, smiling.
He picked up a kabab and fed her.
"Can you cut the cake? Our baby wants cake," she teased.
He narrowed his eyes. Teju quickly perched on his lap, kissing his cheeks.
"You know you're a brat, right?" he asked.
"Me? Brat? Nooo," she protested.
He tickled her lightly, and she laughed uncontrollably.
"I love your laugh, Laddoo," he said, holding her close.
"Oh thank God! Now you're calling me Laddoo! 'Tejasswi' seems alien coming from your mouth. Baby, you're the one making me laugh," she said.
"Are you happy with me?" he asked softly.
"I'm extremely happy, my love. So lucky to have you," she whispered.
"I'm lucky to have such a brat... but beautiful wife," he murmured, silencing her playful protest with a kiss that left her panting.
"Let's cut the cake now," he said, smiling.
