"Hey, I'm home!" EU called out as he stepped indoors, brushing the snow off his shoulders and beginning to unravel his scarf. Someone peeked out from behind the stairway, currently decked out in soft red and green Christmas lights for the season.
"Hi!" Britain replied, smiling back at him. He wore a cute turquoise knitted sweater that came down to the middle of his thighs, sleeves that bunched up in his palms and had his slender fingers curled up holding them. The house was warm enough for him to go bare-footed, although the bottoms of his wool-lined pants brushed against the floor when he walked.
"How was work?" He asked, helping EU take his briefcase off his hands. "Chaotic, as usual. Germany brought two dozen thermoses of mulled wine into the office again, and made currywurst right in the break room. Italy helped by bringing a deep frier and making fries. Someone was baking cookies in a portable oven."
"Well, that sounds kind of nice." Britain piped up again with a little laugh that could span so many different voices, cyan blue eyes glimmering. "And the Secret Santa?"
"Mm- at least nothing was broken this time." He hummed, remembering last year's horrors.
"Fortunately, the painting went a little better. 27 countries sitting down still enough for a good sketch is never easy but we kind of did it. I took photos?" EU continued, fishing out his phone out of his pocket and offering it to him.
Britain took it with both hands gently and immediately started smiling a bit wider as he scrolled through the sample photos. There was EU in the center at the very last row, with a calm expression, surrounded in various levels of chaos. Belgium was making a funny face by sticking out his tongue and pulling his mouth out by the corners with his fingers. Germany sat in the front rows with his legs crossed and hands clasped over one knee, a broad Cheshire grin spread out over his face as his glasses glinted.
Dozens of familiar faces that he used to work with a long time ago. Finland wasn't there, ae was the painter behind the camera, or the canvas in this case. It was sort of tradition to get an actual painting of all of them at least once a year, a tradition that'd been kept going since the Holy Roman Empire at least, if not longer.
He'd expect to see the finished acrylic + oil painting by New Year's, if all went according to Finland's schedule. There would also be another painting of ASEAN and his countries too, both framed up and to be judged by everyone on who posed or acted the best.
"Oh- and also, Italy packed up the cookies, here." EU said, beaconing him over and showing him a big plastic packet full of baked goods. The moment he untied the purple ribbon tying it up he could smell something cheerfully familiar.
"Gingerbread cookies!!" Wales squealed, hopping up and down before laughing and grabbing their stuffy bunny rabbit by the front paws, spinning them both around gleefully.
EU glanced over as his phone was gently set onto the table, seeing Britain standing still with his blue eyes not particularly focused on anything. He knew when to keep quiet and when to enquire questions by now, setting the rest of his stuff down quietly on the table.
