Chapter 19: Tōryanse II

"Those without good reason shall not pass

To celebrate the 7th birthday

We've come to offer our ofuda here

Entering is easy, but returning is scary."

-Tōryanse

"Well, that was productive," Sayaka-chan said, stretching her arms as we stepped out of the library. "But still tiring nonetheless."

"Of course," Kashiwagi-san said. "But it's for the sake of our results, so of course we must study hard."

"Well, with Ayano-chan here, even I feel smart," Sayaka-chan said, laughing.

"But you're already smart to begin with!" I replied. "It has nothing to do with me," I added, holding my files close to my chest.

"You don't have to be so humble," the girl said, patting me on the back. "Our future lawyer over here needs to step in some assertiveness!"

I giggled. It was slightly embarrassing come to think of it, that I had told them that I wanted to be a lawyer. But I had to tell them sooner or later anyway, and they were very supportive.

"The entrance exam is going to be in January, right?" Sayaka-chan asked. "Well, good luck to the both of you," she added.

"Thanks," Kashiwagi-san said. "Well, we still have five months but it's great to start work early."

"That's true," I replied as we walked down the street, the red rays of sunset reflecting on the windowpanes. "At least we can take the time to clear up the concepts we don't understand yet."

The other two agreed, nodding their heads.

It was already nearing evening as we walked down to the tram station down south. We spent roughly around three hours studying in the library. It was rather enjoyable for me though, since I had friends around. Even then, the both of them proved to be rather serious when it comes to their studies, so productivity was still satisfactorily high.

Kashiwagi-san even came up with a timetable of sorts for our studying. We would head to the library after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to study and revise. It was mainly for revision, to refresh the topics taught near the beginning of the year, as well as fundamental concepts carried over from the second year syllabus. Each week we would work on a different subject, in a sort of rotary manner. That week we were reading through our old Biology notes from the first term, where Kashiwagi-san showed us his notes about plant reproduction which he had compiled from a variety of subjects. I looked through them and found them cohesive and detailed, but of course, he was aiming to be a doctor, so I suppose it was natural for him to like biology. I asked him if it was all right for me to borrow them, and he gladly let me.

"Well, Furukawa-san wants to study law, then how about you, Sayaka?" Kashiwagi-san asked.
