The pencil in his hand was in a horrible state. He had a habit of picking at it without realizing it. The eraser was exhausted and the lead was growing stubby. As a result, his notes were an absolute train wreck. Nothing like the ones he had filled the previous page with. He thought about how he would rewrite these notes later until they were legible. However, he couldn't get lost in thought. He had at least 15 more minutes left of this class and he knew the teacher would milk those 15 minutes for all they were worth.
"Jake? Number twelve please." This was his chance. He was confident in his answers as he usually was.
"Sure. A." The teacher nodded and continued to look around the room to call on the next person. Jake was overjoyed in the meanwhile. If he had gotten this question right then he got the one on the exam right as well. He returned to sorting out his notes when he heard a faint voice from beside him.
"Damn it..."
His small smile turned to an annoying smirk when he recognized the voice. None other than Y/n. The same Y/n who bragged so much during the few minutes before the exam about how high she was going to score after studying all night.
"What's the matter? Got it wrong?" He spoke softly while looking straight ahead to avoid grasping the teacher's attention. She knew he was probably snickering and smirking as he usually would during their interactions. He certainly had a talent for pissing her off and a skill for hearing everything she say, even if she said it under her breath.
"Fuck off Jake." He laughed while shaking his head down at his notebook. "Ouch. And I thought we were finally becoming friends." He continued with his notes, deciding to end the small -- what Jake liked to call -- "banter" there.
She was fuming right now. In her usual hushed tone, she told him off but it was like speaking to a brick wall. Her short temper, however, couldn't stop even if she knew he wasn't paying any attention. She was so stuck on teaching him a lesson that she didn't even realize the teacher was looking in their direction.
"Y/n. Shh." Jake felt the teacher's eyes land on them and immediately froze with his eyes glued to the pages and pencil moving as if he were taking notes. Y/n couldn't believe it. He started the teasing and now he's telling her to shush. Unbelievable.
"Excuse me?"
"No, I'm serious just be quiet-"
"Y/n? Number 18 please." She immediately turned to her packet. She mentally thanked herself for being on the right page while cursing Jake out for distracting her.
"C." Again it was right. It was expected from the two best students after all. They were famous at their school for having the highest grades. And the longest ongoing feud because of it.
"That'll be all for today. But before you go I'll be returning your exams. The highest score was 99. The teacher held a big stack of papers in one hand and handed them out with the other.
"It's mine." In unison they turned to face each other, each claiming ownership of the exam with the big 99 written on it.
"Jake Sim? Your exam. Y/n Y/l/n here's yours." The teacher sighed after placing both papers down. The whole class sighed but the two were lost in their world, hoping that their paper was marked the highest score of the class.
"Ha! 99." It was Jake who got the score in the end. He held his packet up with that signature smile of his only to meet the widened eyes of his competitor. The paper was placed face down under her hands and she could only open her mouth to speak but nothing came out.
"Well? What's the second highest score in the class, Y/n?" His smirk returned as he knew that line would enrage her as it did whenever his score placed higher than hers.
"I... I failed?" She was shocked. She had never scored this low before. He laughed and shook his head. "Oh come on. It can't be that bad. After all you 'studied all night' for this exam."
She softly lifted the paper just to make sure she wasn't having hallucinations but the red marker didn't lie. A big 54 was circled right at the top. Jake could see the numbers from the corner of his eye and he couldn't believe it.
"What? Let me see that paper." He took the paper from her hands, snapping her out of her trance and forcing her to desperately try to grab her paper.
"Stop it give it back!" She grabbed it back but it was not fast enough to keep him from seeing it. A 54.
"No way. You couldn't have gotten a score that low." His tone of voice was no longer taunting and teasing but now filled with genuine concern.
"Just shut up.." She was about to put her paper away, never to be seen again when he suddenly spoke up: "Miss? I think there was a mistake here."
"What are you doing? I said shut up!" Again her whisper shouts meant nothing to him. She could feel her cheeks flush when the teacher walked over to their seat, still holding some packets.
"I don't believe this test belongs to Y/n. Look it over please?" The teacher sighed, holding out her hand to receive the test. She glanced over the test and put it on the stack of exams.
"You're right. This is Nico's exam. Sorry for the confusion." She began taking back the exams from everyone after Y/n and returned their actual exam. Y/n felt the lump in her throat disappear and a wave of inner peace washed over her.
"Here is your actual exam. Everyone who received their test may now leave." As soon as it was placed on her desk, Y/n flipped it around, displaying the 98. She was finally able to take some deep breaths knowing that she wasn't failing.
"Still not better than mine but good enough." Jake got up to collect his things and leave. She hadn't noticed that he didn't leave yet, still waiting to see her actual result.
"Oh, what do you care?" She rolled her eyes with a smile from her previous mini-celebration. Jake was now packed and ready to leave for his next class.
"Because it's not fun if you're not one step behind me." And with that, he took his leave. Even staring at his back now, she knew him too well to know that he was smiling. It was Jake Sim after all.
