Claire opened the heavy oak door revealing a guest bedroom which was medium size, it had a walk in closet and a bathroom attached to the room. "well this is your room, it was a guest room but you can decorate it if you want" she said stepping into the room."no thanks i wont be here long anyways" i replied nonchalantly and walking over to the bed where i put my suitcase on top.
"do you need any help unpacking or would you like to do it by yourself?" she asked wiping her hands nervously on her trousers again.
"no i've got it" i said sitting down and taking my shoes off and sitting on the bed. thankfully she took the hint that i was giving her to leave me alone.
"well ill leave you to settle in then ill let you know when dinner is ready" she said giving me a small nervous smile and leaving in a hurry.
"finally" i mumbled to myself. I unzipped my suitcase and began taking all the clothes out and hanging them up in the walk in closet. I saw a photo frame in between some clothes that had my dad, mum and brother in it. i could feel my heart begin to hurt as the longing of going home crept into my stomach.
after i finished unpacking i shoved my suitcase under the bed and grabbed my phone, but was soon interrupted by the door creaking open.
I watched as a doberman wondered in wagging their tail at me. "well hello there" i smiled patting my knee for the dog to come to over to me.
"whats your name.. girl!" i laughed as i checked the dogs gender but getting kissed when bending down. i reached for the dogs collar to find no name.
"hmm" i mumbled and stopped stroking her head. I watched as the dog jumped on my bed sitting next to me and giving me her paw.
"okay okay ill keep petting don't worry!" i giggled for the first time since i had gotten here.
"that's pepper" a small squeaky voice said. I looked at the door to see Dakota lingering in front of my room.
"oh cool" i said and continued petting pepper. Dakota made her way into my room and sat on the other side of the bed she started petting pepper with me as we sat there in silence.
"My mummy told me that the only reason your so quiet is because your sad" she said making me frown.
"Well no I'm always quiet but I'm just quiet and sad now" I replied to the six year old who was watching me.
"Are you sad because your mummy and daddy are not here?" She asked me curiously.
"Yeah something like that" I replied now wanting to call Elijah just to have the sense of familiarity.
"Hey is it okay if I come find you later, it's just I want to call my brother" I asked her with a soft look.
"Yeah sure, you can talk to me anytime you want because we're cousins" she said proudly grinning and confidently walked out the room making me smile.
I picked up my phone and went into my FaceTime contacts. I pressed Eli's contact and waited for him to answer.
"Hey Connie" Eli said his face appearing on the screen, he looked like he was exhausted which was weird as it had only been a couple of hours prior since I last saw him.
"Any news on mum or dad?" I asked hopefully my voice cracking at the end.
"Connie I promised you if there was any news I would tell you straight away.." he said sadly his eyes glistening over with tears.
I nodded the feeling of worry rising in me as I just stared at Eli in silence.
"So how's aunt Claire's?" He asked after a few seconds which made me roll my eyes in response
