Under the Mistletoe

Summary: Maybe it's the fact that Perrie's been playing Christmas songs on repeat for the past month, or maybe it's because their anniversary is just around the corner, on her way home after work, Jade's eyes linger on the jewellery shop across the street more than usual.

Or, the one where Perrie is obsessed with Christmas and Jade is in love.

Perrie is putting up a mistletoe when Jade walks into their apartment.

"Why, Perrie, why?" Jade grumbles, setting down her tote bag and carelessly throwing her keys into the patterned bowl placed conveniently next to the doorway. She crosses her arms and watches Perrie curse as the mistletoe falls from the ceiling.

When they had first moved in together a year ago, Jade had misplaced her keys nearly every day for a solid month until Perrie bought a bowl from Target and had awkwardly placed it onto their kitchen counter. Jade had teased her about it for a couple of days afterward, but wouldn't admit it was pretty helpful.

"What?" Perrie asks innocently, not turning around from where she haphazardly slaps a ball of tape onto the ceiling. She's standing on a chair that seems to be the wobbly one in their set of four from how much it sways under her. Jade holds the bridge of her nose between her fingers at the sight; she is going to witness Perrie break a leg over a useless Christmas decoration when Jade begged her to not go all out.

Christmas is in a month, and Perrie is already in the zone. She had bought them both matching ugly sweaters the other day on impulse for an upcoming Christmas party their friend Leigh-Anne was throwing. Jade is obviously going to wear it because Perrie knows how much of a fool she is for her. However, Perrie had agreed she'd limit herself on decorations, but here she is grumbling as she hangs mistletoe in their living room.

Jade thinks of begging again from where she stands but instead resorts to clicking her tongue at the sight of Perrie's struggle.

"You're going to fall," Jade sighs, walking over next to Perrie. She puts a hand on the blonde's hip and squeezes it, just to hold her steady. She doesn't want Perrie getting hurt. "Are you sure this is necessary?"

Perrie's tongue is poking out as she barely nods, her face red from the effort as she holds down the ball of tape against the string in hopes that it would somehow hold the mistletoe up. She is focused on getting the damn thing to hang. It, of course, flutters to the carpet next to Jade's feet. Jade looks down at the failed attempt and back up to cock an eyebrow at Perrie.

Perrie groans. "Can you pass me that?"

Jade picks it up and holds it between her fingers, frowning at it before passing it back to her. "I thought we agreed that the Christmas tree and the Rudolph-shaped pillows were enough?"

Perrie plucks the mistletoe from the brunette's hand with a chuckle, before leaning down to briefly cradle Jade's cheek with her other hand. Jade's stomach swoops. She melts into the touch as Perrie runs a thumb across her skin, and Perrie shoots her a soft smile before pulling away to cut more pieces of tape.

Jade guesses that Perrie notices the small grumble she lets out at the loss of contact because the blonde lets out a soft laugh as she stands back up on the chair.

"You're such a grinch. It's just a tiny plant, Jadey," Perrie teases, her focus back on the mistletoe. Jade glares up at her.

Jade enjoys Christmas, yes, but casually. Unlike Perrie – who wouldn't hesitate to put up a Christmas tree the day after Halloween – Jade has limits.

"I just think it's tacky," Jade whines, putting her hand back on Perrie's hip and rubbing at the exposed skin from where her girlfriend's shirt drew up. "I just came home from work after a long day, and you're paying more attention to hanging a stupid leaf than to me."
