The two girls sat in silence, watching the movie play across the screen. It was almost over, the classic part where the boy ran at the girl and confessed his undying love for her, but Enid found herself staring at Wednesday, the way her nose wrinkled at the scene, how she crooked an eyebrow at the amount of christmas decorations in the movie, how she gave the TV a plain look when the characters did something stupid, but most of all, how she smiled when the characters exctchanged glances across the room.
The movie ended, clicking to the credits. Wednesday sighed, most likely in relife. She reached over and grabbed a handful of popcorn. "Can we watch something more interesting now?" She asked, clicking through the 'recommended for you'.
"That depends...what do you want to watch?"
Wednesday frowned, looking at a show called The Roommate. "This one is a psychological thriller about a girl who becomes obsessed with this other girl and-"
"Sure."
Wednesday smiled and pressed play as Enid felt her heart skip a beat. She hated any kind of thriller, never mind a psychological one. The first half was good, though a few things made Eind flinch, the only reason she was watching at this point was for the little cat the main character had rescued. Wednesday was intrigued, though even she flinched when the girl pierced her own ears.
Enid frowned as the girl picked up the cat, the main character was planning on moving to keep it, but the girl seemed mad about that. She took the cat into the laundry room and started to wash the laundry, then...Enid gasped and covered her eyes, wishing she could melt into the couch.
She heard the TV click off and opened her eyes. "I'm sorry," Wednesday said, putting down the remote. "I didn't know she would kill it."
Enid felt her eyes well with tears. "She put the kitty in the washing machine, why did she do that?"
Wednesday shrugged. "People do weird things when they are in craze about a person, it can mess with your head, giving you no sense of pain for others or-"
"Stop, just stop, let's watch something else, that doesn't involve a sadistic teenager who seems to have no care for any life but her own."
Wednesday blinked a few times. She seemed a bit desturbed by the words, but she turned on a documentary about cats.
"I don't think there is anything wrong with being sadistic..."
"Are you kidding? There is so much wrong, for starters, they don't care when they hurt someone, they don't care how they affect anyone eles with what they do, they don't care what people think so they become crazed on something stupid no matter how many times people tell them to let it go and-" she stopped, staring at Wednesday, who looked...desturbed.
"Do you even hear yourself," she asked.
"I wasn't talking about you I...I was...you would never kill an animal...and you care when you hurt most people...just not all, and what you became focused on wasn't stupid even if....you risked our lives for it and..." Enid closed her eyes and turned away. Wow. She was stupid.
Wednesday shook her head. "No, I know. I just...sometimes I wish I wasn't like that."
Enid grabbed some more popcorn and popped it in her mouth. "I don't mind it on you, I know you do care, even if...you don't show it sometimes."
Wednesday shut off the TV. "It's ten, we should go to bed."
"Right."
Both the girls stood up and walked out, their footsteps echoing in the long hall. "For the record...the fact that you care that I said that proves that you aren't...you know, a psychopath."
Wednesday smiled lightly. "Oh. That's too bad."
They walked the rest in silence, pushing open the door to their room. Moonlight was shining through the window, making it look like a bluish dance party on Enid's side. Enid walked over to her bed and sat down, grabbing her pj's and heading into the washroom. She scrubbed off her makeup and used her cleansing balm. After changing she brushed out her hair and pulled it into a tiny ponytail. When she walked out Wednesday was ready as well, her braids re done.
Enid walked over and sat next to Wednesday, who was typing out her book on the typewriter. "Can I do your hair?" She asked, looking at the other girl as she kept her eyes straight ahead.
"Fine."
Enid smiled and took out the freshly done braids. When she had done Wednesday's hair this morning she hadn't had much chance to actually do anything with it, so this time she twisted it into a bun, then a ponytail, then a french braid. Wednesday didn't stop her, she just continued writing, occasionally pausing and leaning into Enid's hold. Neither girl mentioned the odd behaviour, they just continued. There was no one to judge, no one to tell them to stop, no pressure to be perfect, or that this was weird. Wednesday's head moved back and Enid dropped the braid. Repeating the morning but this time...it felt okay. Wednesday tucked her head into the knook of Enid's neck.
Without thinking, and without warning, both girls fell asleep.
