in a few days, la selección mexicana was scheduled to play. they were going against france. diego had gone m.i.a (missing in action) for a bit, but i wasn't worried because i knew he had a ton of practicing to do.the media was buzzing with excitement.. and also negativity. many people were on edge, swearing that mexico was never good enough to play against france and that it was a lost cause. they clearly didn't witness how hard all the guys would practice before a game...
diego had offered me two free tickets to the game so my mom and i had a chance to see him play in person.
i would be lying if i said i didn't feel ecstatic over this.
i was basically counting down the days at this point.a few days later..
"it's today," i thought to myself, struggling to get myself out of bed early but still doing it regardless, knowing today was important for my best friend.
i could already hear my mom shuffling around downstairs. she was probably the only person that was possibly a little more excited than me right now.
i finally got up, staggering over to my closet doors.
i took off the jersey that diego has gifted me recently and proudly put it on, stunting off the "d. lainez" that was plastered on the back of the darkly colored shirt. i also didnt forget to grab my sign in support of lainez.my mom and i managed to get out of the house under an hour which was a world record for us. it usually took us longer but we definitely didn't want to be late.
the car ride felt like forever, all the news stations on the radio were reporting and talking about the upcoming game. one of them talked about the winning probability and it was 67% against 33%. mexico had the lowest percentage. i rolled my eyes, knowing that mexico had an even greater chance.
the outside of the stadium was packed, people with mexican flags, posters, and sombreros were everywhere. many people were also holding french flags and posters as well. the atmosphere felt competitive, there were news stations everywhere.
after my mom and i checked in with our tickets, we went inside and found our seats surprisingly fast. people began to quickly fill up the stands everywhere.
there was music blasting inside the stadium, yells and cheers could be heard from every corner. it was now 10:45 in the morning, the game was set to start at 11.
and before we all knew it, it was time.
the players began to show up on the field, one by one. mexico being first since they were the home team. the crowd started to go wild as the players were starting to get introduced on the big screens. once diego showed up, i made sure to yell loud enough for him to hear. even though that was impossible, there was no way he could distinguish my cheers among the other 87,000. it was the thought that counted though.
the game began afterwards and everyone was focused on everything going on in the field. thirty minutes had passed by and mexico didn't have any goals and one yellow card already, meanwhile france had scored once. all the people who came to support mexico started to lose hope, realizing that maybe they really didn't have a chance against france.
after all, france had one of the best players on their side. it was definitely one of their advantages.
and to our surprise (not really), france ended up scoring another goal. at this point in time, the atmosphere and vibe in the stadium was completely different than it was in the beginning. everyone on the french side was excited, knowing the game was basically already won. the mexican's were disappointed and hoping for a miracle to happen. after all, there was still a somewhat long amount of time left so mexico still had time to switch the game around.
