Max slipped on her pretty beat up black converse, she needed a new pair the tongue of the shoe was torn to shreds at the top, the bottoms scuffed and broken as the laces were unraveling into a mess.

She exited her room to see her mom adjusting her make up for a shift at the diner.

"How do I look?" She turned to her daughter, hands on her hips with a bright smile.

"Like a cheap hooker."

"Do you want to go to that bakery?" She scowled.

"Yeah. I'm sorry, you look pretty."

"Thank you." She fixed her lipstick one more time and grabbed her keys. "Let's go!"

The old ratty and beaten down beetle sat in the driveway, it's red finish dusty spotty. Entering the car it smelt of mothballs and cigarettes.

The ride to Sunnyvale was quiet for the most part, every time they entered Sunnyvale she swore she could hear the sounds of angels singing down onto her as if the town was created for that very meaning. It was calm and peaceful there, it was nice.

They pulled infront of the large bakery, kids and parents coming in and out of the building. She exited the car with a twenty in her pocket, wasn't going to get anything too big anyways. "I'll be in the car waiting for you, Alright?"

"Alright, mom." She smiled lightly as she made her way into the shop.

It smell heavenly, the sweet scent of sugar and freshly baked goods filled her airways minus the smell of expensive perfumes and hairspray. She stared into one of the display cases, her eyes rested on these red velvet cupcakes, with white buttercream frosting.

"Is that a shadysider?" A snarky feminine voice could be heard.

"What's a bum like that doing here?" A male voice followed.

She swallowed the bitter words she wanted to say as she smiled to the cashier "two red velvet cupcakes please,"

"Yeah, that'll be $12.15 please," she gave him her twenty. He bagged up the two cupcakes into a box and handed it to her with her change. "See you again soon!" He smiled softly. Maxine turned to exit but the female Sunnyvaler was quicker, she was a blonde who looked to be in her late teens.

"Don't you Shadyside bums know better to stay on your own turf?"

"Oh, I must not had gotten the memo that only basic blonde bimbos were allowed in Sunnyvale." She pouted her lip jokingly, a mischievous little smile curled onto her lips.

"At least I don't look like a skank."

"Skanks a compliment to whatever you have going on, didn't you hear? The 40's are over no need to wear mustard yellow in public anymore sweetheart." She seemed to scoff at the insult, Max just pushed past her.

"Hey! I'm not finished with you yet!"

"The only thing you'll be finishing is Johnny boy over there, and even when he finishes he will still be unsatisfied." Turning back to leave she bumped into a boy, causing her to nearly drop the box, but he seemed to catch it.

"Woah, in a rush little lady?" He smiled, his big blue eyes focused on her brown ones.

"Yeah, gotta get to the car." She smiled softly.
