05 - awkward but nice

It's not that Ajax and Y/N aren't friends, Y/N is just extremely awkward with him. They have known each other for about 3 years now and no matter what Y/N does, she cannot get rid of the awkward atmosphere when she's alone with him. it was fine when they were with friends together. But dull when they're alone, even after Ajax's miserable tries at making jokes to raise the mood.

Ajax is rather popular and known, not to mention smart too, but Y/N was quite different. She might not be the most popular but she knows everyone because of him and people know her because of him. So how did they exactly meet? how did this awkward friendship even come forth?

Y/N spent all her life in Inazuma and was close to many there. She and Scaramouche were close, inseparable even. So imagine her reaction when she learned that she was moving away that summer 3 years ago. it wasn't like they weren't gonna see each other, but going from being together every day to seeing each other every summer was a big jump. They kept in touch easily but after that, it just wasn't the same. Scaramouche made a lot of other friends easily, none as close as her, but he had no problem socializing.

Y/N on the other hand had a hard time fitting into Sneznhaya. All of the students in school already had friends and friend groups established years before. I guess that's what happens when you move to another school during senior year. Many tried including her, but she always felt she was bothering them or that they felt the need to include her even though they didn't want to. It took time and a lot of feeling left out to realize that she could enjoy herself without constantly being with others and focus on her academic work. Instead of forcing herself into groups of friends in hopes of making friends, she studied and became the top of her class. The feeling of being left out was soon replaced with compliments and kudos for her good work in quick time...

'Dang it I missed the bus... what now' said the girl quietly, now stuck in the freezing cold outside. Every day she would go by bus to school, always early and already revising her work.

"Excuse me, do you know when the next bus is coming?" she called over to the elderly lady who didn't hear her. She tried again "Excuse me, ma'am-" 

"In about 10 minutes I think?" a voice told her from behind. it gave her additional chills when she turned around to see his school uniform. Huh, since when did someone else from this neighbourhood go to the same school as her?

"Oh, thanks.." she just followed him with her eyes as he sat down at the stop to tie his shoes.

"hmm... I haven't seen you around in school. I'm Ajax, you?" he said so fluently and softly it took a minute for her to structure her sentence before answering. She swore that simply his presence was warm enough for her to not feel as cold as before.

"I'M Y/N. Y/N L/N. Nice to meet you" quietly said. she hated meeting new people because of the awkward silences that have to occur, but Ajax quickly filled them in with questions and simply made sure the conversation didn't drop.

"Oh yeah, I've heard about you! weren't you 2nd in that one biology quiz? That was awesome" He chuckled when he recalled where he recognized your name. Y/N already knew Ajax because he was the reason she was in 2nd place, to begin with, as he was 1st. She didn't despise him at all for it, she simply felt a little disappointed because it was a 3-point difference but her hard work was paying off either way.

"Mhm, Congratulations to you as well Ajax, 1st place is very impressive" She smiled even tho she was a bit embarrassed. 

"Thanks, y/n, are you from here too? I've never seen you at this stop before"

"mhm, but I take the 07:35 bus, today I missed it" 

"How come you go to school so early? it's cold in the buildings during the mornings. I wouldn't spend a minute more in school than I already have to."

"I like being early. I have time to revise what I need for the day" She kept her answers short and simple, scared of stumbling over my words trying to explain to him how she also had an irrational fear of being 2 minutes late.

"Cool." he looked over and smiled warmly. he was nice, really nice. it was a shame Y/N thought he was being nice just because he wanted to be polite.

The bus came shortly and they both stood up, walking towards the bus driver. Just before Y/N could hand him the money...
"For two tickets!" Ajax had paid for both of them and motioned her to sit down next to him. 'Huh??' was the only thing she had in her mind right now.

"No no, just a second I'll pay you back" quickly handing him the money for him to take.

He simply laughed and closed her hand to inform her to keep her money. "It's alright really, it's not much either way."

"Absolutely not, let me repay you." she said, sternly even.

"Fine, you can repay me by sitting with me, alright?" Before she could even protest or say something he sat down and placed his backpack, under his feet so she could have a seat next to him. feeling a bit anxious that he paid for her, she sat next to him with a nervous smile. "You didn't need to do that haha..." She said so quietly it almost was as if she was talking to herself. 

Ajax enjoyed the ride to school looking out the window making sure they wouldn't miss their stop, while an anxious girl sat next to him glancing over at him, trying to figure out why he did that.

After that ajax came to the bus stop earlier every day to talk to Y/N and go to school together, he even introduced some of his friends to her. Not once did Y/N ask out loud why he was doing that, why he wanted to be her friend even tho he could easily be friends with anyone, and not once did she know the answer to why. She blended into the background yet he still approached her,

While his answer was simple. Even tho he was friends with everybody, that didn't mean he wasn't left out a bit. Nobody considered Ajax as their close friend and he had no one to talk to about his problems because no one really thought about how he felt. Everyone wanted to be like him, but nobody knew that none of his 'closer' friends would pick him over someone else. He was no one's best friend. And with Y/N, he wanted to get to know her. He knew she didn't have any other friends so he thought they could hit it off together. She blended into the background, and he wanted to be able to do that.

And in the end, he was right. they did hit it off.

"Hey Y/N!" Ajax rocked Y/N a bit as she was falling asleep on the train to school. Collei giggled watching Y/N realize she was still on the train. "Where did you go bud?" Ajax laughed as well.

Even tho it's been 3 years they still went to school together no matter what, but now with even more friends. Collei and Tighnari. maybe Y/N got lucky, but she loved how her life turned out after all that. She considered it worth it.

"haha... I suppose I should have fallen asleep earlier" yawned y/n...
