I look around, and see my sister standing with all the parents with tears dripping down her face. I am being sent to death. I hear murmurs all around me saying that I'm the third Donner child to get reaped. I slowly make my was to the stairs where my life will change. Now it's time for the boys.
"Alright! Congratulations Huntress! Now for the boys." I hold my breath, waiting to see if it's anyone I know. "Lake Paterson." I see Lake walk slowly but surely to the stage. I felt a pang in my heart. I always thought Lake was sorta cute, but he was my brothers friend. Not to mention five years older than me. "Alright you two, shake hands." He looks into my eyes and I see sympathy and support in them. His eyes flit away, and we shake hands.
The Peacekeepers shove us into the Justice Building and I am confined into a small room. Right away my sister barges in and holds me tight. "Shh, it's okay, it's okay. You can do it. I love you so much." I gulp back tears. I will not cry.
"I can't do it, I'm only twelve. Think about what happened to Tristen last year. He was SIXTEEN. "
"Hey, you're forgetting that you have Donner blood in you. You're strong, you're fast, and you ARE lethal. I believe in you."
"Where's mom and dad?" Tears were now threatening to escape. My sister looks down.
"They, they didn't come. They watched the reaping on tv and I don't think they could handle seeing you." One tear dropped down my cheek. They don't care enough about me to come. They don't care about me at all. More tears. I buried my head into my sisters dress and we sat there for a good ten minutes. The Peacekeepers barged in after and ripped me away from her. "I LOVE YOU HUNTRESS! PLEASE TRY TO WIN! I KNOW YOU CAN!" And with that, she was gone.
I hate this goddamn life, I was doing a good job at keeping myself alive and now I'm headed towards death. Lovely. No other visitors came. The train was about to arrive so I was escorted out of my room and into a vehicle. It was the first time I've ever ridden in one, but this was no happy circumstance. Lake kept looking over at me, almost as if to see if I was okay. No Lake, I'm not okay. Soon we arrived at the train station. Reporters were swarming around us and I felt the urge to run, but I knew I would be shot on the spot. So I decided to walk straight past them, kept my head high and walked into the train. Lake came in a few seconds after me. The weird Capitol person, his name is Duke I think, showed us our rooms.
I walked into my room and saw the bed. I ran to it and just slept, because heaven knows I won't be able to in a couple weeks. I had the most awful nightmare. It was about the arena. Except I was my brother. I started to scream and I just stayed there, on the ground dead, screaming. I awoke to Lake staring down at me, his hands on my shoulders. I bolted upright and hugged him.
"Lake.."
"It's ok, you're fine, I'm here." He stroked my hair. Wait, Lake stroking my hair? He must've realized it too because he pulled away, blushing.
"No." I hug him again. "Don't be embarrassed. It was helping." We headed down to breakfast to finally meet our mentor.
