Wednesday and Enid passed the long tables in the Nevermore cafeteria. Enid had been complaining this whole morning about muscle strain and her roommate was starting to second guess not waking her yesterday.

I guess not only Enid had learned her lesson.

breakfast was always Enid's favorite meal of the day, it had the most sweets.

Both girls took a plate and went to stand in the queue.

"I swear to god Wednesday, I have never been in so much muscle pain, every move I make is simply torturing!", Enid kept on whining, "Why didn't you wake me up?"

She was never going to hear the end of this, was she?

"Enid it's your own fault, you shouldn't have tried to stay awake, you need more sleep than I do."

That was true, Wednesday was an evening person, and she liked it, the dark and silence the night provided. It was a short break from the noise that everyone made during the day.

They arrived at the counter where all kinds of breakfast items were laid out, with plenty of things to choose from. Enid took her usual combination of strawberry yogurt with added blueberries, the most colorful cereal that made Wednesday's eyes bleed, and some orange juice. The other girl just went with dry muesli, water, and a red apple.

After, they went to take a seat at the long tables.

"Oh come on Wednesday, there must be one parlor game that you like! Think again but this time very good."

"I don't see the use in them, it's just going on pure luck. You don't even have to use your brain."

"There are brainy games too! You're only thinking about games like monopoly. Don't you like those games like chess?"

"I do enjoy chess yes, I used to play it with Pugsley during recess when he was being his pathetic lonely self again."

"Who is pathetic?"

Eugene took a seat next to Enid, impudently joining the conversation.

"My brother", Wednesday simply replied and Eugene's face dropped, "Didn't you say that I remind you of your brother?"

"Yes, I did"

Enid quickly changed the conversation taking in the sadness on the younger boy's face: "So, Eugene, I just wanted to thank you for helping us get out of that hallways as fast as you could, if you hadn't I'm not sure that we would've been here right now."

Eugene turned to Enid, "Oh yes, no problem, did you run into any obstacles on the way back?"

Enid shook her head no and explained that the teachers had held a party last night, and that's why they were almost caught, but on their return, the party had already ended so most teachers must've passed out.

All 3 of their heads turned to the teachers' table, clearly, they had drunk too much last night because most were laying down on the table with their heads between their arms and others were wearing sunglasses with obvious earplugs in their ears.

"When I tell you to mister Keating and miss Krabapple were going at it, I wouldn't be overreacting", Enid giggled as she showed a video of the 2 of them dancing horribly, obviously hammered.

They looked back at the table, in particular at the 2 teachers they had just mentioned. "Yeah, they're going to have a long day today."

just as Eugene was about to say something the whole cafeteria became quiet, principal Fletcher stood at the head of the teacher's table, waiting for total silence giving a look that could shut everybody up in a second. How did people even have this kind of power?
