Chapter 18: The Come-Down

After a quiet lunch in the Great Hall, Harry gave Draco a mischievous smirk. The blonde quirked a single pale brow in question, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

"Want to go for a fly?" Harry asked with a pointed look, indicating he didn't mean on their brooms.

"Are you asking to take me for a ride, Potter?" Draco responded, eyeing him playfully.

"I guess I am," Harry responded, locking the blonde in an intense gaze.

Draco's cheeks flushed slightly, not expecting the shorter boy to reciprocate his flirting. Touching their hands together underneath the table, the blonde responded. I'd be happy to ride you, Potter, but I'm hoping we can trade places from time to time...

Harry's face turned bright red as he quickly pulled his hand away from the blonde— he didn't need Draco hearing his (very loud) thoughts on that comment. The taller boy stifled his laughter as Harry stood up from the Slytherin table.

"Well, come on then," Harry sighed, shaking his head in amusement.

Together, they made their way through the castle to the Room of Requirement. As they were climbing the ever-changing staircases to the corridor with the unassuming blank wall, they ran into the familiar brooding form of their Head of House. The potions professor narrowed his eyes in suspicious curiosity as he registered the two boys approaching him in the hallway.

"Good afternoon, Professor," Draco greeted politely, tipping his head in acknowledgement.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Snape drawled, eyes coming to rest on Harry. "I take it Hogsmeade has lost its novelty, Potter? I should only hope that you are dragging Mr. Malfoy along for help in Potions, as opposed to involving him in one of your reckless shenanigans."

"I didn't fancy walking about in the cold all day. And not to worry, Professor; Draco wouldn't be able to pass on an opportunity to get me in trouble. If I had shenanigans in the works, he'd be the last person I'd tell," Harry replied bitterly, Slytherin cunning crafting his lie with ease. The shorter boy cast a deliberate scowl in the blonde's direction to reinforce his statement.

Draco scoffed. "As if I'd ever work with Potter. Honestly, Professor, do you know me at all?"

"Then might I ask what it is that you boys are doing together?" the Potions Professor inquired, clearly not believing that they would willingly spend time with each other.

"We both missed lunch, so Potter suggested we go to the kitchens to ask the House Elves for a snack," the blonde replied calmly, seeming to appease the suspicious Professor.

"Very well," Snape conceded. With that, he strode past the pair, black robes billowing theatrically in his midst. Continuing on their way through the corridors, Harry gently touched the backs of their hands together.

Nice save, Draco.

Thanks, I'm rather good at lying.

You know? That really doesn't surprise me at all.

The blonde scoffed. What's that supposed to mean, Potter?

Er- well, just that you're very charismatic and grew up with strict parents, so being a good liar makes sense.

You think I'm charismatic?

The shorter boy rolled his eyes. You're positively endearing, Malfoy.

Contented, Draco pulled his hand away—arriving at the Room of Requirement with a smug grin on his face.

Once the grand double doors made themselves visible, the pair made their way inside. Making their way across the the grassy expanse, Harry stopped once they reached the edge of the pond. Draco stopped beside the shorter boy and looked at him expectantly. Harry glanced at the blonde hesitantly, to which Draco responded with a look of confusion.
