Briar Valentine had been seeing John Booker Routledge in secret for nearly 6 months. They'd started dating last Christmas, under the mistletoe.
It'd been a secret, they both liked it that way. Briar's parents were important, they'd lose their shit. John B's friends were serious about no kooks. But they were perfect together.
Briar's window was always unlocked, waiting for John B to come visit when he could get away. They weren't just messing around, it was really something.
Poor Pope Hayward had found out by a completely accidental incident. He'd been bringing groceries by for the Valentine's, the city council leader's family was one of the Hayward's most dependable clients. He came in through the side back door, like always. Only this time, he found John B kissing Briar while she sat on the counter.

Briar missed her period in April that year. She didn't think anything of it, they'd always been irregular. But she missed May and June and Sarah Cameron finally dragged her cousin to take a test.
