I sighed as I threw the last of my bags into the car. I was returning to Nevermore Academy after a long summer. Sure, I loved Nevermore and was looking forward to dorm life and seeing my friends again, but something was pulling me down, telling me this year would not be what I was expecting.

I pulled my phone out of my back pocket to reveal several texts from my best friend, Enid Sinclair. It was a strange pair, the two of us. Enid was bright and bubbly, where I was a bit more mellow and preferred to stay in the shadows.

Anya I am SO excited to see you!!

When are you leaving?

I'm almost at school, have you left yet?!?

Bet ur looking forward to seeing Xavier😉

Anya answers your phone....

Anyaaaaaa

ANYA

ANSWER ME!!!!

Chill tf out Enid. I am on my way now, don't wait for me

I turned my phone on to do not disturb and put it back into my pocket.

"Ready to go?" My mother said as she stepped outside.

"Yes," I said with a grin, "just waiting on the twins."

Suddenly, my twin brothers Oliver and Owen ran outside, yelling at each other. I laughed as they argued.

"Get in the car," I said to the twins, "Enid is almost there and is freaking out about my arrival."

My family got into the vehicle and we drove off to Nevermore. My family only lived an hour and a half from the school, so we did not have to leave as early as some of the other students who attended Nevermore.

"Are you ready for a new semester, Anya?" my mother asked as she drove.

I nodded my head hesitantly, "yes," I said cautiously, "but something feels weird."

I looked towards my mum. She was a beautiful woman. Tall and slim with long brown hair, pale skin and two different coloured eyes. One brown, the other blue. My mother and I looked nothing alike. We had the same brown hair, but mine had lots of blonde highlights. Where she was tall and thin, I was shorter than most and curvy with yellow-green eyes and tan skin. Although she was beautiful, she was incredibly intimidating. most feared her. She could make a man fall to his knees with a few simple words. she could manipulate anyone and anything to her power. there was no name for it, and she was not a siren, it was all a bit peculiar. I was given some of her gifts, but I was having a hard time controlling them, and knowing how to use them. Nevermore was helping, but I wished that I could fully harness my power.

"Why?" She asked, "why does it feel weird?"

I sighed, "I don't know mum, it just does. Maybe it's me just being nervous about getting back into the swing of things and seeing everyone again."

My mum nodded her head, "are you going to ask Xavier out this year?" She asked with a smirk.

"Mum!" I exclaimed horrified, "why must you always bring that up?"

The woman laughed at me. I heard snickers from the backseat and I glared at the twins. They began a chorus of "Anya and Xavier sitting in a tree."

I rolled my eyes, "it's not like that between us," I said hesitantly, "and besides, he only just recently broke up with Bianca Barkley."
