Believe me when I tell you that I never, in a million years, could have thought my night would end like this.
"Casey, shoot!" my girlfriend yelled.
***Three hours before***
"When did you meet?" Anne, Izzie's grandmother, asked with a smile as we boarded a bus. Apparently, she was thinking of going out to eat together after the game, and none of us had a driver's license, so we had to wait.
"Since the first day", I answered cheerfully. "Although, your granddaughter wasn't very happy to meet me." I remembered letting out a soft laugh as I put my arm around Izzie's shoulder and felt her hug my waist.
"You can't blame me, Grandma. It was Ms Perfect in action. Believing she had it all." Anne just smiled, and I crouched down to whisper.
"Now I have everything, with you." She looked at me sweetly, and when we were going to give each other a little kiss, we heard her mother's voice.
"She has everything except a car. What a surprise from the wonder girl." Said Sasha, her mother, sarcastically. "What's the use of having thousands of dollars in your wallet if you're going to take my daughter on a bus."
"Mom!" Izzie interrupted, slipping out of his grip and moving closer to her. "Don't." She said slowly, giving her a menacing look.
"There's nothing wrong with taking the bus, dear," Anne added. "I think it's more romantic than going by car. Waiting with the person you love and accompanying them. That's why, guys," she said looking at Izzie's brothers. "In the future, if you have a partner, never feel ashamed of what you have. Take advantage of those things that you say you don't have to create magical moments."
I smiled at that and watched as Anne turned her body to wink at me. Izzie exhaled and stepped away from her mother. Luckily, the bus was arriving, and we all got on. One of Izzie's brothers wanted to sit with her, and the other with me.
"So you're like a celebrity?!" His brother asked as soon as we sat down. "Like Kyrie Irving?"
"Wooow, I don't think that much. Kyrie is fabulous, I'm far from him, boy."
"My name is Oliver, not boy." He said, looking at me seriously, and I thought I had made him feel bad until I saw him laugh and I noticed his joke. "You should have seen your face!" He made a face, trying to copy me, and I laughed.
During the trip, I found out that Oliver and James, his brother, usually lived with their grandmother since their mother "worked" a lot. He liked to play sports, especially baseball, so I promised to take him to the cages to practice during summer break.
"Do you think Izzie misses us?" He whispered, and I looked at him. It must be hard that your older sister leaves overnight and you can't see her.
"Of course, Oli. She always talks to me about you."
"Really?" he asked excitedly.
"Sure! She told me once that you and your brother went swimming, and you tried to teach a dog to do it. I always laugh when I imagine her trying to save the dog."
He laughed and hugged me.
"Thank you, Casey. For loving her." He whispered, and I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest.
"We are already close!" Izzie said, breaking the silence and noticing our interaction, smiling. "I hope you don't mind, but I've saved enough to bring them to a McDonald's. If you want, you can order a salad."
"Are you kidding?! If we go to a McDonald's, I won't leave until I eat a Big Mac." I waited excitedly for the bus to park, and we ran down with Oliver and James.
