"So, we'll just ignore what happened and pretend to be friends?" I heard Emily whisper, and I sighed as I practised my throws.
After I worked out my problem with Sharice, I was back training with the team. Brynn had taken it well and was the one who talked to me the most, as was Sharice, who would update me on the status of the team. However, Emily and Lauryn were still estranged.
I understood since I didn't expect them to forgive me so easily. I pretended to practice a few moves, but my attention was on the conversation the team was having.
"Emily, she's changed. I know. When she apologized, I heard her sincere." Sharice defended me.
"That's because you need her on the team. You know we can't win without her and you're afraid." Lauryn attacked. And I stopped, frowning. I looked over to where Sharice was standing and she glanced at me quickly before turning her gaze back to the team.
"Look. I know you're all mad. I get it. But it's true. We need Casey. I do." Sharice looked at me again and slowly approached me. She put her arm on my shoulder and sighed before continuing to speak. "But it's not about winning. Because we won't win if we're apart. It's about coming back together. Casey was a jerk. The biggest."
"Thank you," I answered sarcastically and I could see a slight smile on Lauryn's lips.
"But I know that she learned from all of this. And that she will not disappoint us."
The memory of the invitation to attend UCONN came back to me. However, I didn't say anything. I didn't want them to think that I would abandon them when the year was over.
"Girls. I'm sorry. Really. I let you down and left you out. That wasn't right. You are my team now.""But we're not Newton, are we?" Emily asked and they all looked at her for a few seconds before turning their eyes to me, waiting for my answer.
"I don't want you to be. You don't need to be Newton. We just need to be a team. I just want you to know that I'm sorry."
Emily bit her lip indecisively and moved closer to me, holding out her hand.
"Fine. But you disappoint us again and I'll break your famous face." I laughed and held her hand. Lauryn also came over to greet me with a smile.
Apparently, the coach was waiting for us to solve this problem since after we all greeted each other, he reappeared and asked us to start training. We would have a game in two days, and we were all nervous as it would be the first game for the full team.
While training, I thought about what the students would think. If they would agree or not. When practice was over and I showered, I ran into Izzie in the halls. She smiled when she saw me and walked over to me.
"Hey." She said softly and I smiled.
"Hi. How were the cheerleaders?"
"Great. Heard the great Casey Gardner is coming back. Do you know her?" I huffed and rolled my eyes, starting to walk again and bumping my arm against her shoulder, gently.
