THUP!

THE ABRUPT SOUND OF an arrow striking a target filled the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of Su Lin's divine palace for only a moment before settling back.

Su Lin squinted against the rays of sun breaking through the tree canopy of the small forest enclosing her private corner of heaven. Roughly fifty-meters ahead, her eyes zeroed in on the target made of tightly coiled straw and the feather-ended arrow embedded in the red-painted center.

Her lips curled up in a half-smile and she lowered her bow. She kept it grasped in one hand while she reached for a new arrow from the quiver slung across her back with the other. Su Lin walked a few paces forward to line herself up with the next target in the line, this one positioned farther back.

It was then that a woman dressed in deep green that almost appeared black addressed her from where she sat perched on a smooth stone bench a short distance back meant for spectators. Not that she could be called a spectator when her gaze had yet to leave the scroll she was reading over.

Pan Yawen had already seen the impressive archery prowess of Su Lin countless times before being one of the goddess' deputy officials. She even took part in friendly contests on occasion, but nowadays she mostly tagged along to read important matters outloud for the brunette to respond to.

"Your temples in the East have returned to their previous volume of prayers and incense, if not slightly more in a show of gratitude," Pan Yawen reported. "It may be safe to assume the ghost you dealt with was indeed the one responsible for destroying the forest and ruining their hunting success."

Su Lin hummed and nocked her arrow, sunlight glinting off the tip. She took a breath as she drew the arrow back. Eyes locked on the target, she exhaled and let the arrow fly.

     THUP!

Another bulls-eye.

"That's good. I can give Ling Wen the report when I go to return the other scrolls I borrowed in a few days," Su Lin finally said and lowered her bow once more. She moved forward several more paces, lining herself up with the next target, before asking, "Will it be ready by then?"

Pan Yawen finally looked up, a single brow arched higher than the other, pinning Su Lin with a sharp look as her jaw ticked ever so slightly. She looked offended.
