Following the tea shop owner's directions, the group of heavenly officials reached the Nan Yang temple. Once inside, the only light came from the moon and stars filtering through the windows. It had a table set up on which a plethora of offerings were spread out neatly. They consisted mostly of food and incense sticks but Su Lin noticed valuable knick knacks as well.
She continued further into the temple without a word, silently surveying and cataloging the interior space in its entirety. It was a particular habit of hers whenever she entered unfamiliar places. For a long time, she hadn't realized she even made of habit of doing it either, not until Ling Wen asked her about it one day during a lesson with the older official. At the time, Su Lin claimed she didn't know where the habit originated. It was a lie and they both knew it, but Ling Wen, ever patient with Su Li, was gracious and left the topic at that.
Making a mental note to tell Ling Wen the truth if she still proved interested in the answer, Su Lin turned back around to her three companions.
"Strange... the north is definitely General Ming Guang's territory..." Xie Lian said. He turned to Nan Feng, bemused. "Yet there is only a Nan Yang temple. General Nan Yang governs the south-east. It's unusual to receive such generous offerings here in the north."
Without looking up from where he was scrutinizing the offerings to General Nan Yang, Fu Yao gave a hmph! in amusement. "That's right. He's beloved by many."
Su Lin moved to stand near the table and appraised the offerings herself, humming in agreement of Fu Yao's assessment. She glanced up when Xie Lian addressed Nan Feng again.
"I have a question, but I don't know..."
Nan Feng seemed to guess what Xie Lian planned to ask and immediately turned his head away with a huff and said, "If you don't know whether you should say it, then don't say it."
Xie Lian sighed, sounding almost sheepish. "Actually, what I wanted to say is that I don't know who might be able to answer..."
From where she stood, even with the lack of proper lighting, Su Lin had a perfect view of the split second it took for Fu Yao's eyes to suddenly light up, glimmering in a way that might have rivaled the stars as his expression shifted into one of unbridled glee. She felt the corners of her lips twitch upward and did nothing to fight it, the anticipatory aura of being a little shit proving to be contagious as she watched Fu Yao spin around to Xie Lian.
