"Everyone needs to calm down and stop blaming each other, we have the cause of the outbreak." Michael's voice echoed over the food court.
Murmurs spread throughout the crowd.
"What is it?!" Somebody yelled.
"One of our many water sources was contaminated." Michael answered.
People were shouting now. I bit my nails.
"So our water sources aren't secure and safe from the outside?!" Another person yelled. Others shouted in agreement.
"No, somebody contaminated it purposefully."
The crowd erupted in protest. Michael held up a hand to silence them. "We promise you that the other water will be heavily guarded to prevent this from happening again. Until then, if you know anyone who was involved with the poisoning, please contact one of the council members." He stepped off of the table and started back towards his office.
I know exactly who contaminated the water. How didn't Michael see that this was all connected?
"Michael!" I yelled after him. He turned around. "I know you are going to say I'm wrong-"
"I already know what you're going to say, and yes, you are wrong. Beatrice is on the council, she would never do anything like that. Not on Zoey's watch." He turned back around.
"What if she found somebody to do it for her?"
He shook his head and walked away.
Why wasn't he listening to me?! When I turn out to be right, he is going to be the one with Beatrice's bullet in his head.
I stomped back to my plane. Nobody else was there so I decided to do some cleaning up. It felt weird actually doing something normal, I might have to get used to it. I haven't been doing anything because my pregnancy limits me so much. Wake up, eat, take inventory at the armory, eat again, Ryan comes home, eat, go to bed, repeat. I longed to stand in the tower and guard.
Ryan finally came home a few hours later.
"How is everyone taking it?" I asked.
He ran his fingers through his hair. "They are taking it."
Maybe KJ will come back, maybe they will make more cures. They said it was the only one on the bag, but maybe they can make more. But why haven't they tried to cure the rest of the world? The thoughts hurt my head.
"Ryan, it's Beatrice. Michael won't listen to me-"
"Arizona, we can't just lock her in confinement and let the people decide what to do with her, we have to have evidence."
"So you're saying I'm right?"
He looked at his feet and shook his head. "I don't know if you're right or not."
I frowned. "I'll find some evidence."
He chuckled. "If you can prove that she poisoned the water, you can open the drawbridge yourself to banish her."
"Fine. I will."
Thinking of where to start was probably the hardest part. The people on crime shows seemed to be so organized. That night I stressed over my plan. It was like the more I thought about it, the more unorganized and dumbfounded I got. It added to my sleeping problem and I got less than five hours of sleep that night.
The next morning, I woke up to someone banging on the door. Ryan flipped out of bed and took out his gun. He walked slowly to the door and opened it a crack, peeking his gun through. "Can I help you?"
