"What?" Sai asks, munching on a piece of celery dipped in a jar of strawberry jam.
"What? What the hell are you eating?" Prem questions judgingly, his eyebrows scrunched up together in confusion. He snatches the jar and closes it with the cap. "Sai, I am going to be honest, your cravings get weirder by the second."
"Its the hormones Prem. You're a flipping doctor. You should know something as trivial as that." Sai whines, grabbing it back with a frown. "Another word, and I WILL throw this all over the very nice Kurta your wearing."
"You know what... Ima get going. I'll get Veenu down to the car and... you can join me and my bud whenever you'd like. See ya!" Prem backs away carefully towards little Veenu, who is clumsily crawling about on the floor.
She smiles as they rush off out the door. A sigh escapes her mouth as she puts the jar back into the fridge, and adjusts the pallu of her saree. "Ya'know what little one, I really hate Prem sometimes. Come on, does he not know that you are the one who wants these weird combinations?"
After grabbing the keys off the hook, Sai finally leaves the flat, and makes her way down to the parking area. The neighborhood is full with people and families gathering together, in celebration for the oh so awaited holiday.
Once she makes it to the car, she is met by the view of Prem standing beside the door of her seat, patiently waiting for her.
"Where's your bud? You could've kept him with you." Sai says to him.
"Well, my bud took 2 seconds to fall asleep, much like yourself. So I put him inside. Now, my lady, please join me in our vehicle." Prem responds, opening the door, and taking her hand to help her into the car.
Sai grins as he does this gentlemanly courtesy, a rare experience to many women. She knows she is independent, and very well could get into the car herself, but the little effort he put in to make her feel special, makes her feel like a queen. "Thank you, Mr Kapoor."
"Your welcome, Ms. Joshi." he smiles, passing her a wink. "All in a day's work to make my hormonal friend happy."
He sits down beside her in the drivers seat, and pulls out into the street.
"What's diwali like at night time here?"
"Beautiful. More than anywhere else I have been, actually."
"Really?"
"Yes. Really. And I've worked in tons of places throughout the country, so you can't challenge my opinion on this."
"Well then. I won't."
The midday sun shines down on them as they drive through the busy city to the closest mandir. The beams make her face glow even more. She wears a golden and dark pink saree, with gajra decorating her silky hair. A golden choker adorns her neck, its pink studs glistening in the sunlight. And in contrast to her color choice, Prem wears a dark green kurta, gel shining in his hair, matching with his little buddy asleep in the backseat. The car drive is silent, until Sai turns on the radio, and a song begins playing.
Koyi Kaisey Unhey Yeh Samjhaaye
Sajaniya Ke Mann Mein Abhi Inkaar Hai
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar Hain
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar Hain"I like this one." Prem comments, in between verses, and he begins humming.
"Yes... it's very... pretty." Sai agrees, questioning her word choice. Prem chuckles as she pulls through confusion.
Dheerey Dheerey Jatan Karney Se
Dulhaniya Ke Khultey Hriday Ke Dwaar Hain
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar Hain
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar HainSai's voice merged with the singers, and the enjoyment so evidently portrayed on her face brings about a giddy mood between.
Baalon Mein Badh Ke Gajra Lagaana
Nazdeek Aaney Ka Hai Bahana*Sigh*
Sab Jaan Ke Bhi Chhaliya Ke Chhal Se
Mushkil Hai Bach Paana
Oh, Akhiyon Se Thag Ke Batiyon Se JurmanaAlmost surprised, Prem looks towards Sai, whose eyes grow redder. Tears gloss over her eyes, and she quickly wipes them away.
Jo Main Tokun, Kaha Na
Bhavon Ko Aisey Taane
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe
Jaaney Balma Ghodey PePrem joins her in singing, using a rather obnoxious voice to catch her attention. And catch her attention he did.
"Shut up, you're ruining the song." she scolds, pursing her lips. Prem shakes his head, and keeps going.
"I swear Prem, I will murder you if I hear that singing voice again." Sai threatens, concealing what he assumes is a hint of a smile.
"Ok." he answers, relieved that her mood is back to normal.
Bharna Voh Jaaney
Mera Maaney Behes Bekaar Hai
Kyun Sawaar Hain Kyun Sawaar HainSai continues to look at Prem, who is having fun as she sings. It was obvious why he bothered her, and she's thankful for his clown-like nature. It is the only thing preserving her mental sanity as she spends her first festival in 8 years, without the presence of the Chavans.
The memory of Virat haunts her today, and perhaps... even a little bit of the guilt she harbors for leaving him.
Prem's humming along to the melody snaps her out of her thoughts, while he slows down near the mandir, parallel parking successfully, and then he turns to his partner/roommate/friend.
Koi Kaisey Unhey Yeh Samjhaaye
Sabar Karney Se Hi Phalta Pyaar Hai
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar Hain
Jaaney Balma Ghodey Pe Kyun Sawaar HainShe finishes the verse. "Ready to go?"
"You bet I am." Prem smiles, getting out of the car, and opening her door at record speed. Once again, an unneeded gesture, but one that makes her feel good inside. After helping her out, he takes out sleeping Vinayak, and holds him very gently. He sticks out his arm for her to take.
"Don't you ever get tired of all the little things you do Prem?" Sai asks as they cross the street. Prem shakes his head.
"It makes me feel useful. My mother used to complain about how much of a rogue my father was, and how he seemed to lack basic manners. Honestly, I don't blame him for not being too attentive. But I took it up, and decided, why not make my mother proud." he replies, as they go up the steps. "And anyways, your pregnant, the last thing I want is you or my bud getting hurt."
