chapter 6

Why the hell did i have to be the unlucky one? "Welp... this is us..." I groaned and keyed the code for the apartment. When i opened the door, we were greeted with a panicking Sonic pacing the living room and a very annoyed shadow lounging on the sofa.

"Where could they be?" sonic shouted, throwing his arms in the air. "We searched the entire city and nothing!" he then dramatically turned towards shadow. "What if they died? Or worse!" he fell to his knees.

Shadow blinked, and his eyes met mine. He held the gaze for a second, then looked passed me to rouge, tails, and cream. He then looked back at sonic. I expected him to say something, but he didnt and just rubbed his nose and popped his neck.

Just... wow...

Rouge smiled to herself then cleared her throat, "ahem."

Sonic was quick to look back. "Guys?" his eyes then landed on the two recent additions. Sonic's eyes grew wide. "buddy?"

"Hiya, sonic" he chuckled awkwardly and waved

Sonic jumped in an instant and was suddenly in front of the boy and gave him a tight hug. He let go and took in the boy's appearance. "Lookin good, tails," he grinned, giving him a thumbs up. "We could pass as actual brothers!" he laughed. He then looked at me, "boy, am i glad you guys are alright. I never had a doubt! Where d'ya find them?"

Rouge put a finger to her lips with a sly smirk. "Just around," she said cooly and made her way to the couch by shadow.

"Really?" sonic scrunched his face, then looked at the boy who just shrugged and followed rouge.

"Hi, sonic," cream greeted sweetly.

The blue man engulfed her in a hug too and she laughed. "Im sure shadow's happy youre here."

Really? That grumpster? There's no way that raincloud of a person–hedgehog?--could be friends with this ray of sunshine.

"Im sure" she smiled softly, holding onto sonic.

"Alright guys... inside you go," i shooed them deeper into my apartment. Cream was the first of the two to join the others on the couch, but sonic remained.

Sonic's demeanour changed drastically when he called my name softly. I hummed, acknowledging him as i closed and locked the front door. "Thank you..." his eyes met mine. I looked at him quizzingly. "For finding them and letting them be here."

I nodded slightly, "well... rouge didnt really leave me any other option. She cornered me."

He chuckled, "that sounds like her." he then pulled me into a hug. "Thank-you... again," he whispered.

I stiffened, and a small shiver ran down my spine. I was unsure of what to do with myself, nonetheless with my arms. "Y-yeah... no problem..." i struggled, awkwardly patting him on the back.

When he let go, i glanced over at the others. Rouge was looking at me with a mischievous smile, but thankfully she broke eye contact first. But behind her, red eyes peered, burning a hole into me.

"You need help with anything?" sonic asked, grabbing my attention.

I considered his question for a second. "How's your cooking?"

Sonic chuckled awkwardly. "Not really... that's more of a Cream or Shadow thing." i looked back over at shadow, but he was gone. My brows furrowed.

"Right... well, whenever you lot are hungry..."

Everyone made themselves comfortable in the living room and we figured out a decent sleeping arrangement. Cream and Rouge on the living room pullout, Tails and Sonic on the blowup mattress i pulled out of storage–the boys thought the girls would prefer an actual bed–, shadow remained by himself in the office. I really hoped there were no more of them. Shadow didnt seem keen on sharing, and nor did i.
