Chapter 4

It's been two weeks since my arrival to Vulance. I have been keeping a low profile observing the residents of this small town watching the humans and werewolves live side by side. It was obvious that the human residents were unaware that a third of their fellow neighbors are werewolves. I was still staying in the Red Roof Inn and had managed to get a job at the local bar. It was the only place that would hire me without a permanent address and paying me under the table. My wages were strictly from tips. After procuring the job, I made a payment plan to pay the garage every two weeks for replacing the engine.

The bar was ran by an older human couple, Cindy and Nash, and it was Cindy who persuaded her husband to hire me. At one point in Cindy's life she lived on the street and she felt sorry for me when I told her that I had no place to call home. The tattooed couple were in their early sixties and both avid bikers and owners of their bar, The Brewery, for about fifteen years. Cindy was hard on the outside but sweet on the inside once you get to know her. Her husband, Nash, was hard inside and out. His sweet side was his wife. He was gruff and a man of few words.

I was sitting on a bench eating a sandwich when they finally pulled into the park. Just like clockwork Celeste Wright along with her son and two werewolf body guards entering the park.

They came to town every Tuesday, their first stop was a local diner, Haven, where she spent lunch with her friends and owners of the restaurant. They would then go to the local library and spend an hour returning and checking out books, and participating in reading program for kids. They would end their weekly trip, here at the park located near the center of the town for the boy to play and enjoy some ice cream.

I couldn't understand what it was about the young, pregnant mother that piqued Carson's interest. She was about four or five months pregnant and very surprisingly human. I knew Carson thought that it should be banned for werewolves to have human mates. But knowing him there was something deeper going on here. What it was I wasn't sure yet.

It was obvious by the way people acted around Celeste and observing her for weeks that she was a sweet and caring mother of a very active two year-old boy, Caden. Happiness radiated from her infectious smile, honey smooth voice, gorgeous long blonde hair, and the most grayest eyes I've ever seen.

Yes she seemed to have it all. She was sickening. I hated how happy she was. I hated watching her perfect life. I hated her. Was this an act she put on? Or was she really that happy? And what about the elusive alpha, Colin? I have yet to set eyes upon him.

I can't believe that I got stuck on babysitting duty. I should be lying on a South American beach getting plastered and checking out the local hotties. But instead I was stuck in this hick town where nothing happened. I knew what I had to do, but really didn't relish the idea. I stood up closing my book and cramming my half eaten sandwich in the paper bag leaving behind the scene of happiness. I knew how this would play out. Next Tuesday would be the day that I started the next phase of my plan, direct contact. I just hope that the happy little family was ready.

I went back to my quiet hotel room and changed into the skort and tshirt and headed for my shift at the bar. I was going in early today to help Cindy with inventory. Despite the 'scared little girl' act I got pretty good tips. It seems that guys loved the chase and the fact that I cowered away from them and kept my distance made them work even harder to gain my attention. A few times, Nash had to intervene when a couple drunk assholes got a little too grabby. Of course I could kick their asses but I had a image to protect. Damsel in distress was by far my best cover. It always made men feel good about themselves when they could protect someone weaker than them. And I love to feed their ego. The bigger the ego the easier to manipulate.
