y/a* - your age

"Where are we going?" I asked Ethan. He finally got back from summer camp and school hasn't started for him yet.
He smiled. "Your favorite place." I smiled bigger than I ever could.
I gave him a hug. "Thank you!" Ethan was definitely my favorite brother. He was a few years older than me with a different mom, but he still loved me the same. He says his mom wasn't very nice and took his eye. I don't like her even though I never met her.
We got to the cafe where I ran in to grab our spot. A little booth in the corner right by the window. We always made fun of people who did stupid things.
"Wait up Y/n," he chuckled.
"I needed to get the best spot," I smiled.
"For a y/a year old, you really want your spot."
I shrugged. "I couldn't let anybody else take it."
He sat down across from me. "How's your summer?"
I groaned. "It sucks 'cause I never get to see you. Next summer can you pleeease stay?"
He smiled sadly. In his eyes, I knew something was wrong. "I don't know. You know how dad gets."
"Why? Even for one summer? Or even a half! For God's sake, I just want to spend time with you."
He frowned. "I know, but next summer is really important. And if everything goes well, I can stay home. I don't have to go back."
I smiled brightly. "Really?!"
He nodded. "Yeah." He gave me a half hearted smile.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing," he answered. "What are your plans this year?"
"Don't brush me off, whats wrong?"
He shrugged. "Next summer is going to be dangerous, but its okay. I promise I'll come back. Ethan smiled at me and I smiled right back at him

*time skip to after the war*

Ethan promised me he would be back. Now I sit there, at his grave, sobbing.
"Ethan, you promised. You said you'd come back." I wiped my tears, but it was no use, many more were falling down.
I laid down on my side. I couldn't take this much pain. I wailed. I didn't care if I attracted attention or not, my brother was gone and there was no going back.
