It's the fourth quarter in the semi-finals of the King of California High School playoff game and coach just called a timeout to draw up what could be the last game of the season.
"Let's go, Nico!" I shout to my boyfriend of the past five years.
Alongside of me, screaming her head off, is my best friend Aaliyah. We've been the loudest at these games since our freshman year.
"Your man has been going off all game," she whispers as we both cross our fingers in hopes that we get a chance to play for the championship next week.
"My boy, Nico, has this in the bag," my little brother Jerald shouts before clapping.
I chuckle because ever since Nico and I started dating, in the eighth grade, my little brother has taken a liking to basketball. And he's definitely become a leader on his travel team as a result of all of the hard work he puts in with Nico during the offseason.
"C'mon baby," I whisper before hearing the whistle blow and watching my twin brother Jordan pass it to a teammate.
My eyes stay glued onto Nico, just like everyone else's. Since he's the five star recruit that's committed to Duke University on a full scholarship starting next fall.
"I'm calling it now, Nico's hitting a floater over their big man," Jerald predicts before a screen frees Nico at the top of the key.
He gets the ball and quickly fakes left before dribbling right and finding a seam between two defenders.
My eyes widen when I notice the clock is down to three seconds and Nico is just crossing the foul line as the other team's center starts to run towards him.
"Three, two——" the crowd counts down and he pushes up a floater just above the outstretched arm of the defender.
It feels like the ball is in the air forever before it comes down to the top of the rim where it bounces high and backspins in the air.
The buzzer sounds and the ball finds it's way through the net seconds before the entire stadium floods the court to celebrate.
I smile and scream at the top of my lungs as I watch Nico be lifted into the air with his arms high in triumph.
Chants of 'Beverly Eagles' ring loudly and I'm the loudest of them all.
As I celebrate, I catch a glimpse of Nico waving me over. So I bump and push my way through the crowd as they put him down just in time for me to greet him with a winner's kiss.
"You did it," I say proudly.
"Crazy, right?" He replies as reporters stand around in hopes to speak with him. "Look at you sweating. Are you sure you didn't play the game?"
I laugh because he always wipes the specks of nervous sweats off of my nose after he gets a big win.
"Way to hoop, cuz!" Unique interrupts and I literally cringe at the sound of his voice.
