Nyeesha Brooks

I woke up bright and early excited to start this new job. I made pancakes and bacon for both Chance and I before I started getting ready.

"Good morning, Ny. Someone's in a good mood." Chance stated.

"Really? You can tell?" I asked.

"Yeah, you haven't smiled like this naturally since the day I met you."

"Ohh, well yeah I am in a good mood. I'm excited about this new job" I told him.

"I'm happy for you," he said as he grabbed the plate I made him from my hands. "Thanks," he said as he sat at the island.

"You're welcome," I said as I finished washing the pan. "I'll be ready in about twenty minutes tops." I told him.

"Cool," he said as he took a bite out of his bacon.

"Thanks, I can walk back home if you're busy" I told him as I got out of the car.

"You said you'd be done at 4 right?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said.

"I'll be here, now have a great day. I'll be at the studio. Call or text me if you need me," he said.

"I will and you too" I said before I turned around to walk into the vinyl store.

"Hey Norma" I greeted the store manager that I had my interview with previously.

"Hi Nyeesha, nice to see you again. Right this way" she said as she led me to a room in the back of the store with my name on it.

I had my own little office.

"This is your office, just do your magic to bring more consumers into the store. You can do anything, make websites, flyers, brochures, blogs, social media sites, anything about the store. Here's more information about the store, facts, and what we sell and our mission. You really have a laid back job, just sit and enjoy yourself. Take any break whenever you want" she told me. "You can also leave when you want too, your job can be done at home if you'd like."

"Thank you Norma," I told her as she left the room.

I was focused on my work until my phone started ringing interrupting me.

It was Chance.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Are you off yet? I'm outside." he said.

I looked down at the time. It read 4:26pm.

"Oh shit, I totally forgot." I told him as I started saving everything that I was doing. "I'm coming out now"

"Alright" he said before I hung up.

I shut down the computer and left.

"See you tomorrow Norma" I rushed out of the store.

"I'm so sorry" I told Chance as I got into his passenger seat.

"I've been texting you, but since you didn't respond I thought you were busy so I waited awhile. But it's cool," he said. "How was your first day?" he asked me.

"Good, I just can't believe I worked that whole 8 hours without a break, I was so focused." I told him.

"Damn, are you hungry?" he asked me.

"Yeah, this cereal is about to be life."

"Do you want to go out for dinner?" he asked. "I honestly don't mind. You deserve it," he said.

"I'm good though, thanks." I responded.

"I'll be in the studio finishing up this track," he told me as we entered his home. "Nico's coming by too if you don't mind."

"Chance, this is your home." I told him.

"But you live here too. I just had to make sure you're okay with it." He said.

"Yeah," I responded as I went into the kitchen.

I poured myself a bowl of Fruity Pebbles before I typed another poem on my phone's notes.

"Hey Nyeesha," I heard Nico say.

"Hey.." I responded as I looked up from my phone.

"How was your day?" He asked.

"Good, you?"

"Good, I can't complain." He said.

"Hey when are yall dropping Surf?" I asked as Chance entered the kitchen.

"It's a secret. I'll just let you know it's worth the wait." Nico told me.

"Yeah and it's very important." Chance added.

"Yall suck, the anticipation is real for some new music from yall." I said. "I still feel like this is all a dream."

"What is?" Nico asked. "Us?"

"Like being in y'all's presence. I actually live with the Chance The Rapper. I still listen to his music. I'm like everyone else out there waiting for yall to drop surf. I use to check Twitter everyday just to see if it dropped." I laughed.

"It's not a dream" Chance said as he hugged me kissing my cheek. "You can come to the studio if you'd like,"

"Yeah I'll come" I said as I put my empty bowl into the sink.

I followed them into Chance's home studio. I've never been inside a studio before. It was a cool experience to see them actually record themselves singing and rapping and then transforming it into a record.

After they recorded a few songs and joked around, Nico left.

"Whatchu trynna do?" Chance asked as he lit a cigarette. "I'm bored."

"It don't matter,"

"21 questions?" He asked as he played some old Kanye in the background.

"Sure," I responded before grabbing a water bottle from the fridge. "You first?"

"Favorite artists?" He asked.

"To be honest, you, Gambino, Kanye, Logic, and uhh idk."

"Cool"

"Where do you find inspiration for music?" I asked.

"It just comes and goes." He said. "That's kind of a hard one,"

"True,"

"Do you have any siblings?" He asked.

"Yea, I have a twin brother but I don't talk to him." I admitted.

"Why? If you don't mind me asking."

"He left me at the worst time in my life." I started. "This was when my mother would lash out on me. She would let all her anger out on me physically beating me. He would see her doing it but wouldn't do anything. I never put my hands on my mother or called CPS because I loved her and I was scared that she'd go to jail. She was all I had at the time. My brother just decided to up and leave with no warning. He never wrote me or anything. That was when we were sixteen." I said as Chance wiped my eyes.

I didn't even notice that I was crying.

"You know you are a strong person, right?" Chance told me as he held my hands. "You aren't a product of your environment either, you gon be good with or without them. You hear me? Now stop crying." He told me as he pulled me into his chest.

He wrapped his arms around me and kissed my forehead.

"You know I got you right?" Chance asked as he looked down at me as I nodded.
