I wake up to the sound of birds chirping and the sun beaming on my face through the bedroom window. I take a deep breath and take a look around the room. Lucas's head is resting on my chest, his arms wrapped around me. I hear this familiar noise I have not heard in so long. It's a buzzing noise, it goes in, and out. One or two seconds between each buzz. Buzz...buzz...buzz. The buzzing stops for a few moments, then begins again. I slowly get up and out of his arms, and he stirs but sleeps soundly. I walk out of the bedroom, into the living room, closing my eyes, and listening closely. The buzzing sounds like it's coming from up in the loft. I quietly walk up the stairs and listen again. Six buzzes, then silence. The buzzes begin once more. I look under the two beds, in the drawers. I basically turn the place upside down but can't find the origin of the noise. I close my eyes and turn around the room, to see if that will help. I can hear it the best when I face towards the big windows, and the wood framing on the ceiling. There. I see a small hump along the framing, and I see it vibrating. It's my phone. I had wondered what happened to it, but it had been the least of my worries until now. I wondered how I was going to do it and be silent at the same time. I look at my surroundings, looking for anything that will help.
"Babe? Ba- what're you doin' up there?" Lucas laughed as he started up the stairs. I picked up the broom off the floor.
"Trying to clean the tops of the fans. I left to let you sleep longer, and I looked up here and saw they were really dusty so, yeah. But I realized the broom doesn't reach the fans, even if I stand on the bed... so, it was a useless ef-" We both hear the sound of a car on the gravel out of the open window.
"Who could that be?" Lucas and I walk to the window and peek out. It's Kris's car. "Babe, will you do something for me?" Lucas pushes me slightly away from the window.
"Of course, anything for you, baby." I smiled at him.
"Will you... just stay right up here... behind the bed for me, please?"
"I'm sorry but I'm a little confused. Why can't I come say hi?"
"I just-" she knocks at the door, "please. I'll explain later... Do it for me?"
"Okayyy..." he goes back down the stairs, and I get behind the bed. He opens the door. "Hello?"
"Hi, Lucas. How're you?"
"Uhm, fine. Why are you here, Kristina?"
"Oh, I'm just checking in on you. Your kind of worrying me. I only ever see you come down once a week, and you go to the grocery store and come back up here. You're always alone in the car, but you buy more than enough food for one person. It's all just confusing to me."
"Oh, no, I'm great. I just prefer eating in bulk, I keep myself quite busy up here. Did you need anything else?"
"Actually, yes. Will you come out to my car?"
"Uh, sure." He looked up to the loft and closed the door behind him.
This was my chance; I could go and get my phone. I grab the broom back up off the floor, and I lean over the railing of the loft, trying to get the bristles to push the phone to at least reaching distance. I lean farther and farther, nearly falling over. The phone is barely moving, so I grab onto the large square wooden beam, and I stand on the railing. I reach out with my arm, and my fingers barely reach it. If my arm was even just a little bit longer, I could get it. The phone buzzes again, and as if in some miracle circumstance, it just barely moves the phone in my direction. "Yes." I breathe out. I reach out to the phone again, and I grab the bottom of it. I drag it to me, and I get down from the railing. The battery is at 19%, and I have 694 messages, and 149 missed calls. "Shit."
