(Y/n's POV)
"Watch out!" I shout, catching Steve's attention right before the blow strikes him. He raises his shield just in time to block his face from getting sliced open.
"Hulk, smash!" Hulk rages.
"You petty humans are no match for Mjolnir!" Thor declares to his foes.
I glance around the battlefield and spot a HYDRA agent attempting to sneak up behind Clint. "Clint, duck!" I warn him before sending a blue energy blast hurling toward the HYDRA agent's head. Unable to move out of the way in time, the energy blast makes contact with the man, scorching his entire face.
"Thanks, Y/n," Clint remarks, reloading his bow.
"Don't mention it," I state, turning around and getting into a fighting stance.
A hoard of HYDRA agents are rushing at us. Some are holding weapons and others are super-soldiers, who possess inhuman strength. "Let's wrap this up!" Natasha shouts above the chaos of battle.
"Do your thing, Y/n," Tony addresses me.
I take a deep breath and focus on building up a large amount of my energy. With a flurry of startled shouts, all of the HYDRA agents in the vicinity lift into the air, a faint blue glow encompassing them. A scream splits through the air as I release all of my built up energy, sending the agents colliding into the rock hard ground and effectively rendering them unable to fight.
As soon as I stop using my powers, I feel myself weakening. I inhale sharply before glancing behind me to see the other six Avengers celebrating our win. Choosing to take this opportunity to escape, I make my way over to the closest building and slip behind it. I quickly inch away from the battle scene, distancing myself from the Avengers and any other prying eyes.
As my energy grows unstable, I can feel myself diminishing in height. My once five foot six body is now a good many inches shorter. I sigh in sorrow as I begin the long walk back to the tower.
(Loki's POV)
I watch the newest female Avenger from deep within the shadows as she takes down every HYDRA agent with her magic. All of the other Avengers, including my oaf of a brother, are mediocre compared to her. I never would have imagined that Midgard contains a human with such power as this one girl.
It would be so easy to take her powers for myself. If I can find a way to harness her powers, I can finally fulfill my birthright and reign over a realm, even if it's a pathetic one such as Midgard.
A smile forms on my face as I slowly retreat back into the shadows.
(Y/n's POV)
When I reach the tower, I'm thankful to find out that the Avengers aren't back yet. They must have eaten out to celebrate our victory. I quickly make my way to my room and take a quick shower to rid myself of all the dirt and blood clinging to me.
After changing into a clean pair of grey sweatpants and a red tank top, I plop down on my bed. As I glance around my bedroom, I catch my reflection in the mirror. The pain and despair I feel when my eyes land on my small form overwhelm my senses, sending me into a flashback.
A five year old me is playing outside when I spot a bird lying in the grass. I quickly approach the bird, only to find out that its wing is injured, making the little blue jay unable to fly. "Oh, you poor thing," I murmur, cautiously picking the bird up and placing it in the palm of my hand.
I gently rub my finger along its wing, drawing a pained chirp from the bird. "Don't worry. You'll be alright," I whisper, sadly smiling at the bird. Without me realizing it, a soft blue glow quickly surrounds the bird's wing before fading away. The bird immediately lets out a happy chirp and flys away. A chuckle leaves my mouth as I wave goodbye to the little blue jay.
A few months after the blue jay incident, I'm in my room watching TV when my dog, Max, comes running in. He jumps up onto my bed and starts incessantly licking my face, blocking my view of the TV screen. "Get off of me, Max. I'm missing my show!" I whine, trying to softly push him off of me.
Since he doesn't understand humans, he obviously doesn't move. "Max!" I repeat a little sharper than the previous time. When he doesn't move but instead starts rubbing his tail in my face as well, I finally snap. "I said get off of me, you stupid dog!" I shout, tossing Max off of the bed.
He hits the wall with a loud thump, whining in pain as he knocks his back. Blue tendrils of magic suddenly start emerging from my body, drifting into the air. They start to wildly move about my room, knocking over almost everything in sight. My eyes go wide with fear, and I briefly see Max run out of my room as it begins to shake with the force of whatever these blue wisps are.
My parents immediately rush upstairs to see what the commotion is, gasping in shock once they see the state of my room. "Y/n, darling, you need to calm down," my dad hurriedly says, holding me down. By this point, I'm full on hyperventilating with tears streaming down my face. "Take deep breaths," my dad instructs. I'm about to protest when he repeats, "Deep breaths." I will myself to do as he says, and soon, my breathing slows down and by heartbeat resumes its normal pace.
After I've completely calmed down, my parents join me on my bed. "Do you know what happened here today?" my dad asks me. I shake my head no because I honestly have no idea what just happened. My dad motions toward my mom and she sighs before starting to explain.
"Well, when your dad and I were younger, we tried to have children but were unable to. We tried for years, but after realizing that it was physically impossible for me to bear children, we gave up hope of ever starting a family," my mom quietly recounts, tears forming in her eyes.
"A few years after we stopped trying for children, a woman came to us and begged us to raise her child for her. She said that she came from a magical place called Asgard, which is located beyond the stars. She told us how they were at war, and it was unsafe to keep her child with her." My mom pauses for a second to wipe her tears away. "Of course, we didn't believe her at first. She came to us talking about places out of myths, so we were about to turn her away when colorful lights started to swirl around her baby's hands. They were beautiful and looked like a thousand glowing stars. We immediately agreed to raise her child and keep her little girl safe from any and all harm. That little girl was you," my mom finishes.
I ponder my mom's answer before glancing up at her with sad eyes. "Does this mean that I'm not your child? That you don't love me?" I question in a small voice.
"No, darling, no," my mom hastily says, running her finger along my cheek. "You are and have always been our child."
"And we will always love you," my dad adds, pulling me into a hug.
I snap out of the flashback when I hear a door slam in the distance, indicating that the rest of the Avengers are back. I ignore them and continue staring at my pitiful self in the mirror.
Why do I have to be like this? Why can't I just be normal? I close my eyes as a single tear drips down my face, landing with a plop onto the pillow below.
