I am not afraid

A lie I told myself as I held my crying sister, running away from the chaos and destruction.

I am not afraid. I am not afraid. I am not afraid.

I repeated the phrase like a mantra, striving me forward despite the burning in my lungs and the ache in my arms. I willed myself to not look back, to keep moving forward. Looking back will mean facing the truth, the destruction, the horror, making it a reality.

I looked to my mother, my brother, my sisters. For them I will lie, for them I will stay strong and keep moving forward.

For I am not afraid.
