Many jobs were taken up in Singapore. Most people became coolies. They did hard labour every day for almost no money at all. Some carried boxes from ships for trade while others mined to find ore. All people who came to Singapore had a motive : to do well and make some money to send home.
Most Europeans did the trade and traded things with each other. Indians, as they had threatening bushy beards, became police or became people called dobis. A dobi washes clothes at a river called 'ghaut' at where is called at Dhoby Ghaut today.Malays did trade with spices. Chinese took up a number of jobs. Coolies, barbers, roadside food hawkers and letter-writers were examples of the jobs that the Chinese took up.
Unfortunately, some people did not even make it to Singapore. They died on the trip there because they either fell ill because of sea-sickness or hygiene problems. Everyone shared a kitchen and bathroom and as many as 30 squeezed in a room. We must be thankful for the better hygiene in travel to Singapore now.
