In exchange for his blood?

Aki turns his upper body so that his shoulder is against the tub instead of his back, his lower body remains parallel with the bottom. With a more direct view of Angel, he notes that his expression was eerily serious from where he sat on the stool.

Aki knew that blood and devils were a dangerous combination. He wasn't even sure why Angel would ask for such an exchange. He contemplates their relationship up to now, looking for an answer within himself.

Even before Makima ruined everything, Angel sought him out, stood close to him or asked him for a treat on break. The more time he'd spent with Angel, the more he'd come to appreciate his limitations as a devil. He couldn't just leave Public Safety. He couldn't even choose what locations he went to. Not without expressed permission, anyway.

Aki pitied him, even then. Maybe not right away, but the emotion eventually did come.

Thinking back to the beach, Aki realized he truly wanted to live. When figuring out how he'd avoid the Future Devil's premonition, Angel suggested he should run away; leave this life behind so he might survive. Within Angel's wish for Aki was a languid admission that even if Aki left him behind, he knew he could never escape himself. Angel's leash was forever tethered to Public Safety. Even now he'd willingly donned his collar just for a shot to give Aki the life he'd almost lost.
