"What do you mean we have to have the book ready by the 15th?" I heard Dan say in the other room.
Oh god. Oh god! We aren't going to finish in time! I continued to listen to the conversation,
"Are you sure the deadline can't be stretched?"
"No, no. We definitely can!"
"Ok. The 15th. Bye"
Dan strode in a few minutes later, his breath slightly heavy and his eyes filled with tears.
"Are you ok?" I began to ask.
"They want the book by the 15th. Come on. Lets work." Dan answered, his voice filled with tears. He didn't actually answer my question, completely avoiding my attempts to make him reach out. I turn back to my laptop, letting out a sigh as I began to type again but my mind is clouded with concern.
A couple of hours later and I get up to stretch my legs. My back was aching from sitting in the same position too long and I really need a cup of coffee. Dan continues to furiously type, barely even nodding as I place his coffee on the table next to him. He doesn't even react when I brush a kiss across his forehead.
I lean back in my chair, raising my cup to my lips and watching the steam rise from the boiling liquid. We're going to have to sleep soon, even if Dan doesn't want to. We've been awake for almost 20 hours. It's going to take a lot to force Dan away from that computer screen though.
I begin to read through my work as I sip my coffee, small smiles spreading on my lips as I read over certain passages. I can't wait to share all this with the phans. I place my now empty cup on the table beside me, leaning forward in my chair as I read the screen. Behind me I can hear Dan moving. Good. It's about time he went to bed. He's been up longer than I have.
"I can't do this anymore!" Dan suddenly yelled, throwing his notebook on the floor. I looked up in shock as loose pages scattered across the floor.
"What?" I asked cautiously, looking up at him through my fringe.
"I don't give a single fuck anymore." He yelled.
"Dan," I began to say but then he burst into tears, sinking to the floor and pulling his knees to his chest.
"Oh Dan..." I murmur, saving the document on my laptop before crawling over to him and pulling him onto my lap, "It's ok, bear, it's ok."
He just continued to sob into my chest, balling handfuls of my t-shirt in his palms.
I rocked us slowly, placing small kisses on his forehead and eventually his face, when he looked up at me through tear clogged lashes, his cheeks stained with tears.
We sit like that for about 10 minutes before Dan starts fighting my hold, "I need to continue writing or we're never going to finish." He says in a faint voice.
No. I had a better idea,
"No more writing today, bear. Come on."
I pulled us up, letting Dan save the tabs on his laptop before pulling him into the bathroom.
"Bath time!" I smiled, twisting the hot water tap.
"Phil?" Dan said uncertainly, leaving a long, lingering gaze across the dark hallway.
"Bath and then bed." I insisted, walking over to him and stroking the hem of his top.
He let out a long sigh, "But the book..?"
"Screw the book." I murmured, pulling his shirt over his head and leaning forward to press my lips against his, "I don't mind as long as my little one is ok."
Dan smiles at the familiar pet name. The one I saved for special occasions. To be honest it doesn't make sense to use it now Dan is taller than me, but back in 2009 it was perfect.
I pulled away to check the temperature, smiling as Dan came up behind me. Two arms around my waist as he dropped a bath bomb in and we watched it fizz and dissolve in the water.
"I love you." Dan whispered in my ear.
"I love you too."
As the cold water poured into the now boiling bath, Dan and I undressed eachother. It had been a while since we'd had a bath together but we fell into the familiar steps until Dan's back was leaning against me, the bubbles bypassing both our shoulders.
I twisted strands of his hair in my fingers, they were curling in the steam, and a smile spread across Dan's face.
"Why don't we do this more often?" He asked, his eyelashes fluttering against my cheek like a small butterfly kiss.
"I don't know but we definitely should." I answer, kissing just below his ear and watching as he shivers under my touch.
We lay there in silence for a few minutes, Dan resting his head on my shoulder. His head is in turned, his lips brushing my neck.
"Do you want me to wash your hair?" I barely breathe.
Dan nods and I begin to massage my shampoo into his brown locks.
"Raspberry.. really?" He asks as I rest his head on my lap to wash out the bubbles.
"Shh..." I murmur, silencing him with a kiss.
After our bath I wrap us in a towel and pull his body to mine. He hardly ever lets me be the big spoon. It's his justification of fairness seeing as I insist on topping most of the time.
"We don't worry about the book, ok?" I whisper.
"Ok." Dan whispers back and then he's asleep.
