There was always an empty space in the life of Elsie Newton. It always felt like something wasn't quite there. Her heart wasn't quite whole. Her memory was never quite intact. Her love was never able to be fully given to another. It didn't bother her. At least, not as much as it should have, she had grown content with the feeling of incompleteness. In fact, she had grown comfortable with it. She had stopped looking for answers, stopped trying to make friends, stopped trying to give her love out because she knew that she wasn't capable of it.
Like a flower wilting in the fall, Elsie told herself that one day she'd come springing back to life. That the sun would shine on her once more and she would be complete but she wasn't in a rush to find it. She was happy as she was.
But the feeling always niggled. In the very back of her mind, a thought lingered that something was missing. She wasn't sure what it was but there was something about her life that didn't feel right. Her eyes always drifted to an opening door, her heart seizing as she hoped for someone to walk through but whoever she was looking for, never appeared. Some days it unsettled her and she felt herself spiraling into thoughts of her past and trying desperately to locate her parents but coming up empty. Other days, it was just another part of her routine and she kept moving.
If anyone ever asked Elsie how she really felt about her life, it would always be the same answer. She was comfortable and she was happy. She didn't need anything else. And she certainly didn't want to disrupt her perfectly constructed routine with world-saving missions.
However, her feelings didn't matter when it came down to the fate of the Planet and so, S.H.I.E.L.D had other plans for her. One sunny morning, Agent Coulson came knocking and Elsie was forced into a world that sent her reeling. Like a poorly constructed suit, her life fell apart with the smallest of tugs and everything she thought she knew was thrown to the wind.
The memories crashed back in in a sickening wave and she finally remembered who she had always hoped would walk through the opening door.
