❝ 02 , five minutes ❞
Elsie wasn't entirely sure when she had been knocked out but when she came to, in what looked to be an interrogation room, she was far from pleased. The linoleum floor was cold against her bare feet as her head shot up off the table. The light was so bright that she squinted against it at first. But when her eyes finally adjusted, she realised that there was someone with her.
Across the table from her was a woman. Her brown hair was tied back but a side-swept fringe still covered her forehead. Elsie narrowed her eyes. The surge of anger and frustration built in her chest and when she realised her hands were free, she shoved the table forward. Without even a second thought, she staggered to her feet and rushed to the nearest door.
But when she slammed the button, nothing moved.
"Elsie Newton," The woman snapped. Her voice was calmer than Elsie expected but she didn't let her guard down. Elsie turned to face her, a scowl on her lips.
"This is unlawful," She snapped as she continued to mash the buttons behind her back. The woman sighed and pushed the table back to where it had been a moment ago.
"Please sit down, we need to talk," The woman said simply as she gestured to the now empty metal chair. Elsie stared down at herself. In her sweats and jumper, bare-foot without her phone. There was nothing else she could do but listen to whoever this woman is.
"What's your name?" Elsie asked as she walked to be stood across from the woman. If Elsie had been thinking straight, she would have come into this much calmer. If this was an interrogation then she had to make herself look as good as possible and she also needed to gain the trust of whoever this was but she had been knocked out so it wasn't exactly easy to be level-headed.
"I'm Agent Maria Hill. Please, take a seat," Maria repeated. Elsie nodded and sat down, adjusting until she was as comfortable as she could be, "We have not arrested you. SHIELD is acting in your best interest," She added. Elsie found that hard to believe but she kept a straight face, nodding. She tried her best to at least pretend to understand.
"And what exactly is that?" Elsie asked as she crossed her arms over her chest. It was a defensive action but less defiant than anything else she could have tried.
"You're a Private Investigator, correct?" Maria asked. Elsie scowled at the obvious avoidance of answering her question but nodded her head, "How long have you been in that line of work?" Maria asked curiously. Though her tone made it seem like she already knew the answer. Elsie responded anyway;
"Eight years." Maria's head tilted ever so slightly before she corrected herself.
"Only eight years?" Elsie nodded. She could still remember the first time she had been hired. It was completely accidental and yet, it had landed her here.
