Poland - 1943

Y/N stayed in the ruined town overnight. The next day was a new year. They stayed in Ludwig's collapsing home, roaming around and being hit with memories and feelings from the past.

The soldier left the house soon after, taking some rations that weren't damaged or expired. Reaching from their bag, they took out a loaf of bread Gunther had made for them. They broke the bread in half and munched on one piece while putting the other one away to preserve food. They walk down the worn and chaotic road of the town, structures broken, and homes destroyed. This is how war affects places and people.

Y/N kept walking but stopped in their tracks at the sound of shuffling nearby. They took out their hunting knife and crept near the shuffling sound.

"ARGH!!"

"AHHHH!" The mysterious person screamed at the top of their lungs, which made Y/N pause.

They lower their knife as they stare at the frightened person in front of them. They were curled up, hugging their knees with bags under their eyes and tear stains on their cheeks.

"Please don't hurt me! I don't want to go back!" They plead. They also had wraps of bandages covering a good chunk of their head with it covering the right eye.

"Back to where?" Y/N ask, they put their knife away and crouch down.

"D- Deutschland... I don't want to go back to them. He tortures me out of pure fun! He's mad!" They answered. They trembled as they spoke.

"The Third Reich? Don't worry, I'm not one of them. And I won't turn you in, I'm also on the run." The soldier said they gave the person a soft smile before sitting down next to them and handing over their piece of bread. "Here you must be hungry, I don't mind sharing."

The person hesitates before taking the piece and munching down on it.

"So who are you?" Y/N ask.

After swallowing and a few sniffles, they finally answered, "I'm Poland... I was severely injured by the USSR and the Third Reich. I've just recently escaped and I don't know what to do.."

The soldier frowns as they listen to the broken country. The poor boy went through enough, and they're too stressed and traumatized to think properly.

"Why not come with me?" Y/N offers. Poland looks up at them, and the mix of confusion and sadness was in his eyes but also a glint of hope.

"Where are you heading off to..?" He asked. He didn't say no or yes, so he's probably not sure about the offer which Y/N doesn't mind. After all, he did meet them.

"I'm heading back to Moscow, I'm an important person there, and I'm needed." They answered.

"The Soviet Union????" Poland stood up with horror and terror as he heard Y/N say the name of the capital of the person who attacked him.

"Hey, hey! It's ok, it's not that bad!" Y/N immediately said once they noticed the scared look of the poor nation.

"N-No, he's going to send me back to that monster! O-or even worse! Torture me!" The Polish boy sobbed at the thought, which honestly broke the soldier's heart.

Y/N pulled the small nation into a warm embrace, wrapping their arms around his shaking form and holding him close as he sobs into their chest and accepted the hug.

"Poland, I promise you that I will protect you. I will not let anyone hurt you, not Third Reich or even Soviet." They swore, gently pulling away from the hug and looking at the country who started to wipe his tears with his sleeve.

"...You swear?"

"Pinky swear."

The two have been traveling together, sharing stories, and getting into a few trouble with some Nazi soldiers, but with luck on their side, they manage to get away easily. Besides a lot of them are dumb.. but still, they couldn't get their hands on Y/N or Poland.

Y/N held a map in their hands that Poland found in a town they passed. They were well fed and had a nice rest from the town who were nice folks over there.

"It looks like we're getting closer to the border, and with winter coming soon, things would look bad for the Germans." the soldier said, gently folding the map and putting it away.

"You think Soviet is strong enough to fight against Third Reich?" Poland asks, fiddling with a scarf around his neck.

"Of course, and besides, we Russians are skilled in the cold!" Y/N said they ruffled with the country's hair before continuing to walk through the forest as to take a shortcut.

"Well, do you think he'll let me stay?" He asks again, following close behind Y/N.

"He better, or I swear if he doesn't, then he better pray to God before I send him up to heaven myself." Y/N threatens at the thought of Soviet for a moment, earning a soft laugh from the shy nation.

After walking for a while, they set up camp so they can rest and take a break. Y/N made a tent out of Fallen leaves while Poland went to get sticks.

Suddenly, Y/N felt a soft snowflake land on their face. Looking up, they saw that it had started to snow now. The first snow of winter, made them smile.

Just as they thought things were getting better, they heard a scream from Poland, fearing for the worst they took out a knife that Gunther had given them, and they went out to look for Poland.

Y/N soon stopped in their tracks as they saw Poland on the ground with other soldiers surrounding the area with their guns pointed at the two.

But these weren't Nazis no, these were Soviet soldiers. And they swore their luck got twice as good when they saw the one and only Soviet Union among his men.
