Gentle warmth. Autumn mornings were perfect. The empress rose, brushing the dirt and leaves off of her clothes. Luffy was already awake, cooking a fish over a fire.
"Mornin' Hancock. Here, I made you breakfast." He said, handing her a small bowl of cooked fish chunks and berries.
"Breakfast in bed from my dearest! How could I resist?"
"Uhhh yea sure. Anyway today you're gonna show me how to build a shelter right?"
"Of course! We'll build an inviolable home! Unfortunately, it'll remain small, due to our lack of time."
"That's alright. So, where do we start?"
"We shall start with the frame. I'll dig a moat, in which we'll lay logs to build a strong foundation. You are to cut down as many trees as you can, and debranch them. We'll go from there."
He gave her a thumbs up, and grabbed his hatchet. Rayleigh left him with a hatchet, and a small knife. He used them to gather wood and skin animals.
2 hours later...
It was about as hot as it would get. Noon meant the sun rested directly overhead and the temperature was the highest. Luffy approached Hancock, who had dug a square moat, roughly 1.5 meters deep.
"Uhh. You really worked hard, huh?"
"Anything for you, Luffy 🥰🥰"
"But you didn't have a shovel..."
"You shouldn't concern yourself with trivial matters."
He awkwardly chuckled.
"Anyway, what's next?"
"On each corner, place a debranched tree upright. They'll serve as pillars."
Using all of he strength he could muster, he placed the logs upright, holding them long enough for Hancock to shovel the dirt back into the hole, until each of them were held upright. The corners of the moat were now filled, but the sides were still dug out.
"This is looking great. How do we build walls though?"
"There are 4 walls to be made. I'll make 2 planks for each wall by braiding the branches from the trees you gathered, and coating them in clay. In between each plank, we'll stuff sacks of leaves to serve as insulation. I want you to fill as many sacks as you can with leaves, grass, flowers, and the like."
"You got it!"
4 hours later.
The sun had completed about three quarters of it's journey, and the sky's subtle change in color alerted the two that they were running short on time. Luffy brought what seemed like the millionth bag back to their site, and saw Hancock, breathing hard. She wiped a drop of sweat off of her forehead, and steadied her breathing, noticing him approach.
"I've already finished all of the walls. Now, we must put the sacks of insulation between the layers. I also built an extra plank, packed with straw and clay, to serve as our roofing. I'll need your help putting it up there once we finish the walls."
His eyes widened. 8 walls, sturdy and full. Standing upright, made of intertwined wood, similar to that of a bird's-nest. Except, the empress didn't use straw, she used wood. She's really something special.
"Hancock. How are you doing all this? Aren't you a bit tired?" He asked, putting a hand on her shoulder. He saw the subtle drowsiness in her blue eyes. She placed her hand on his, and gave him a smile.
"Of course not! Let's finish stuffing the walls."
And so they did. It took them about an hour. Each wall was now insulated with densely packed leaves, grass, flowers, and the such. They placed the final plank on top, and stacked boulders on each corner, preventing the roof tile from being blown away.
"Great work, Hancock. We should shower now. Bathing is a lot harder during winter."
"Shower? Like together?"
"Uhh yea why not?"
"Gladly!!"
