HAYDEN KING ALWAYS knew she was different to other girls. While they all fawned over boys, especially the boys in a band called Sunset Curve, Hayden would fawn over her best friend. No one knew of course, if she told others she would be cast out. So she kept it to herself.
It seemed like a normal day at school when she accidentally bumped into one of the members of her friends favorite band. He was super sweet about the whole accident and offered to take her out for food, this led to a great friendship between Hayden and the band member, Alex Mercer.
After introducing Hayden to the other members, Luke Patterson, Bobby Wilson and Reginald Peters (who preferred to be called Reggie), Hayden became more close to them she was ever with the girls which of course led to many rumors going around about her and the guys.
Hayden always ignored it, she knew that she would never be with a guy let alone her best friends. So, she had to come out and tell the boys. Seems like she wasn't the only one coming out however, because Alex told them he was gay as soon as Hayden did.
Not long after, Hayden was invited into the band after Luke accidentally walked in on her in the studio playing his guitar. He was ecstatic when he found out that she didn't only play the guitar but also the piano and she could sing. She became the fith member of Sunset Curve.
The band slowly gained more popularity outside of school as they began to play more clubs in Hollywood. Still, no one knew about Hayden being a lesbian and many guys followed the band just because of Hayden.
Unfortunately, some secrets just get out.
The band lost a bit of popularity after Hayden's sexuality got out, she also lost many friends but the way her family and best friends reacted was what hurt her the most.
"You're gay?" Her best friend, Amy, said with disgust.
"What about it?" Hayden asked, crossing her arms in discomfort at the conversation.
Amy shook her head. "To think I've been friends with a dyke this whole time."
Hayden felt something in her throat but she held it back. She would not break down in front of her former best friend. "And to think I've been friends with a homophobic bitch my entire life."
Hayden walked away as soon as she said those words, the walk turned into a run down the school hallway as homophobic slurs from her peers began to be shouted at her. She didn't care that she would miss the rest of the school day, she ran home. Unfortunately, when she arrived she over heard her parents talking.
"Hon." Her mother began, talking to her father. "The best option is to send her to that religious camp. Maybe they can straighten her out and stop her from being gay."
Her father nodded. "Yeah, we'll send her when she gets home."
The teen girl slowly went to her room and as soon as her door shut, she began to stuff her bag full of clothes and other things. She grabbed her guitar and her duffel bag full of clothes, toiletries and money before grabbing her skateboard and climbing out of her bedroom window. She landed with a thud and glanced inside to see her parents looking through a pamphlet.
Hayden didn't feel bad about leaving nor did she feel bad about dropping out of school. Hayden got to the studio to find all the boys talking about something and seeming worried, although their moods changed when they saw their friend. The girl threw the bag on the floor and put her guitar next to it before going over to the dart board and angrily throwing the darts at it, a habit she picked up from Luke.
The four boys glanced at each other, worry going over their faces once again. Last time something like this happened, Luke had run away from home and now they believed Hayden had done the same. Alex waited until all the darts were out of her hand before approaching the fuming girl.
"Hayden?" He asked softly, placing his hand onto her shoulder.
He could feel her tense before turning around, tears welling up in her eyes. She slammed herself into Alex's chest as she began to sob, her emotions finally catching up to her. Ale wrapped his arms around her and glanced at the boys who were now even more worried. Luke walked over and rubbed her back.
"We heard what happened at school." He spoke. "Did your parents find out?"
Hayden nodded, pulling away from Alex and wiping her eyes. "They were gonna send me away to get straightened out." She said between hiccups.
Once again, the boys glanced at each other. All silently agreeing that Hayden would be staying at the studio with Luke from now on.
Often, Alex or Reggie would join them for a couple nights due to their own home lives being bad. It seemed Bobby was the only one with a normal family. Having to live in the studio with Luke made them quite close, often writing songs together to pass the time or get thoughts out of their heads. She helped him write a song for his mother, he regretted running away from her but didn't want to turn back for some unknown reason.
Life just seemed to carry on and neither Luke nor Hayden took any notice of their missing posters popping up around town, they continued with their band and would soon play the greatest gig of their lives.
The Orpheum.
