Wednesday's POV
As any adolescent I dreamed of leaving my parents the second I turned 18. Luckily for me I had saved up enough to rent a small apartment in a college town far away from the house I grew up in.
That just meant I had to find a job in a city I knew nothing about.
My all black attire, expressionless face, and erm... less than enthusiastic attitude was something most people aren't willing to take in and hire.
I headed off to my wonderfully small apartment and set up what I had. Queen mattress on the floor, dark mahogany bedside table with my typewriter, clothes in the closet, a single chair, and my altar filled with animal bones and candles.
The basics.
My resume was typed out by non other than me and I took off to the streets of the college town I lived in. First stop: a vintage chandelier shop.
Nope.
Morgue assistant?
Surprisingly, they found me too heartless.
Many turn downs on the spot until I had nothing to resort to but mediocre, disgustingly underpaid customer service jobs. I entered the Fast and Pass grocery store already dreading the fluorescent lights and sweaty customers.
Some 16 year old girl named Hailey looked me up and down and called over the speakers "Enid we have someone here for an interview at front desk" then closed the speakers.
"What are you?" She asked a little curious but drained from her day. I hissed at her and she took a step back. "Geez" she said then rolled her eyes.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around. "Heyya, my name is Enid and I'll be interviewing you!" She stuck out her hand and I didn't dare touch it. "Are you the manager?" I asked. She looked way too young to be doing anything of importance- she seemed to be my age.
"Oh goodness no, David is the manager but he's on vacation right now with his wife. I am just here to do his bidding until he gets back on Tuesday. Come, follow me!"
Enid, as its name was, was a happy go lucky girl who wore too many bright colors. She led me to the back that I could only assume was the break room. Beige walls and a cheap desk with a microwave on it.
I handed her my short but proficient resume. "Wednesday Addams" she said with a bit of curiosity. "My mother thinks she's clever" I mumbled.
"Well Wednesday it says here your skills are efficiently working, punctuality, ability to work alone without instruction, multi-tasking.. etc. ok so what made you choose Fast and Pass?"
"No one else would hire me."
"Ok... well erm.. you would be cashier so you'd be greeting customers with a smile, exchanging money correctly, answering any questions, and be able to stand for hours on end. Think you can handle that?"
I glared at her. What a hopeless girl. "No smile but other than that yes I'm a very hard worker."
She pursed her lips and squinted at me. "I admire your honesty Wednesday so I'll be frank. You're the first person to apply in a month so we would love to hire you, as we're short on staff."
Touché. "Alright I'll do it, when do you need me to start?" She pretended to look at the schedule then said "tomorrow. Oh and you can wear black but no ripped pants and no open toed shoes. If you're willing to work here come in at 8 am tomorrow and we'll get started on your paperwork."
I nodded and told her I'd be coming in then very quickly walked away in shame. A grocery store? Please. This was not only humiliating but a certain torture I wasn't looking forward to in the slightest.
I got in my car and headed back to my dreary apartment and as soon as I rested my head on my pillow, I received a text from Enid.
E: Looking forward to onboarding you tomorrow morning! Bring your ID
W: ok.
E: You're going to make this difficult aren't you?
W: yes.
E: Would getting you some dinner tonight, so I can know you better, make it easier?
W: no.
E: Offer is there if you change your mind! :)
W: it won't make it easier but I'm hungry. Don't expect to know me any better, if anything you'll like me less.
E: sounds good to me. Send your address and I'll pick you up right now
I sent her my address and semi-happily accepted the fact I was going to get free food but my god I hated that I'd have to be around that colorful freak show of a girl.
About 15 minutes later I got a knock on my door and I opened it to see Enid with a big smile and a small potted succulent in her hands. She handed it to me then looked at my empty apartment.
"Well I'm glad I got you something to liven up your room. This is a sad place Wednesday." Her lips curled down looking past the doorway.
I placed the succulent on my bedside table right next to my typewriter and silently left the apartment with her. My body froze up when I saw her car.
"Too much for you?" She asked sarcastically. Somehow she managed to get pink wrap on her vehicle and had pink plush dice hanging on her mirror. Not to mention the fuzzy rainbow cover she had on her steering wheel.
"You know what I think I'll stay home tonight.." I said starting to back away. She pulled my arm and dragged me to her car.
"I did not just waste gas to come to your place and pick you up a gift. Now get-" she yanked me "in-" she opened the passenger door "THE CAR!" She said trying to shove me in.
But as she was doing so I quickly whipped around to get free of her hold on me and with her final shove, as I twisted facing her, I was pushed up against the passenger side of the car and she had no option but to fall against me.
For a couple of seconds we were both unsure about what happened. Her chest was against mine and we just looked at each other's eyes in confusion.
Blue.. with a small ring of hazel..
She quickly ripped off of me and brushed herself off. "Well.. just get in and that won't happen again." Her head turned up a little bit as she casually walked to her side of the car.
I reluctantly got in and breathed in the smell of some sort of berry air freshener she had. "So where are we going exactly?" I asked her.
"Wherever you want. Just get me out of this goddamn parking lot."
