Wednesday's POV

I arrived 5 minutes early to my first ever shift at Fast and Pass and was greeted by Hailey, the young teen who inspected me the other day.

"Hey Wennie!" She exclaimed. "Don't ever call me that." She rolled her eyes at me and chewed some bubble gum, smacking that shit around her mouth.

"Ok well I'll be training you today. We were gonna have you do computer work but our wifi things are down so I'll be running through some scenarios and you tell me how to handle them."

I looked around looking for Enid but could only see tired customers pushing around their carts. "Hey where's-" she interrupted me and said "Enid? She's not here today she called out."

"Is she sick or something?" She turned and signaled for me to follow her into the vegetable side of the store. "No she'll be back tomorrow she just does this sometimes. Why? You another one of her suitors?"

I gave her a look with wide eyes but furrowed my eyebrows in disbelief. "I'm sorry? What do you mean?"

She laughed and said "never you mind dear Wednesday. Now let's get started. Let's say I'm a customer and I am asking you where the broccoli is. How would you respond?"

I pointed at the broccoli and deadpanned saying "there." She scrunched her face up and said "nope. Customer service is important! Be friendly like their request is of upmost importance."

"But it isn't. I don't care."

Hailey looked around then leaned in to me. "No one does. But we get raises if we're good at this shit."

I sighed and in a monotone sarcastic voice said, "here let me show you where it is. Now that we're here, let me know if you need anything else."

She jumped up and clapped her hands. "Congratulations you're not mentally impaired!" I groaned and we continued our training before she let me handle customers by myself while she watched in the distance.

On my break I walked out with Hailey who whipped out a cigarette and handed me one. "I don't smoke but thanks. Aren't you a bit young to smoke?" and handed the cigarette back to her.

"Aren't you a bit too old to talk to a 16 year old?" I started to walk away not having the time to deal with her snappy attitude but she followed me.

"I'm sorry sheesh take a joke. Enid has a better sense of humor than anyone here and you have none. I'm surprised you're interested in her." She said nonchalantly.

"Whoa whoa wait, she told you I'm interested?" She blew smoke in my face and it burned my eyes.

"No, but everyone who comes in here follows her around like a lost puppy and she always breaks their hearts. You may look different but it'll be the same with you."

I didn't even know what to say and put my hand out. "Yeah I think I'll have that cigarette."

I worked again, and when my lunch came around I saw that Enid texted me.

E: hey, sorry for not coming in today I wasn't feeling great but I'll be there tomorrow

W: Hailey says you're not sick so what's up

E: oh just personal stuff but don't worry I'll be just fine ;)

W: don't do that

E: do what?

W: the wink

E: whatever you say Wednesday.... ;)

I didn't answer and wondered what Hailey meant by Enid breaking hearts. Was she trying to do the same with me? Lead me on then try and get me to like her before leaving?

I wasn't worried about myself. She may have caught me off guard last night with the house warming gift and the door thing. Well, both door things, but I am not the type to have crushes.

She would not get me so easily. Maybe I would break her heart instead.

My shift was long and I was exhausted pretending to me nice, and failing miserably, but I didn't care what people thought about the store or me.

I sat down at my typewriter and the succulent was staring me down. "What the fuck do you want" I asked. I'm talking to a fucking plant.

I got up and poured a bit of water on it and placed it on my windowsill so it could get some sunlight. I wasn't in the mood to read or write so I grabbed a marker.

The pot was beige but light enough for me to write "Addams" on the semi grainy textile. "There you're a part of the family but don't let it get to your head."

There was a knock on my door and I looked through the peephole to see Enid with her computer. I groaned and opened the door.

"What do you want?" She smiled and waltzed right into my gloomy room. "Well.. I saw last night that your place is empty so I wanted to do some online shopping with you to fill it out a bit."

Confused but curious I let her sit on my bed and open her laptop, she looked up at my alter of candle and animal bones then looked back at me.

"Didn't see that last night.. makes sense though. Alright so what would you like or need in this place?"

I pondered and looked at a couple of boxes I still had that I couldn't open yet. "I do need some floating shelves for some of my stuff."

She looked on Amazon and added a few to her cart and asked if it looked good. "White? No no I need a dark mahogany to match my side table."

She looked at the table and pursed her lips. "Fine I can do that, but that's an extra $15." I shrugged. "It was your idea to help me out."

"You're right, no problem at all. Do you need silverware or pots and pans to cook? Any spices or food you need?"

I told her I needed a couple of those things and she happily added them to the cart and checked out. "Done and done, they should be here tomorrow but it's going to arrive at my place so you'll have to come by."

I guess that'll be good for my plan to break her heart. She'll know how it feels after I get done with her.
