ALEX HAD ARRIVED AT THE OUTER BANKS the day after the storm. Her journey here had gone pretty well - apart from the fact that it was her first time on a plane, and her fear kept growing as she felt turbulence stirring her in every direction."Nice welcome," she'd thought as she planted her feet outside the plane.
But she was safe, at least.
The police had given her the number of her cousin, Valentina, so she could call her as soon as she arrived. Yet Alex hesitated. She stood there in the airport, her hair a mess and her eyes rimmed with sleep deprivation, with her big bag on her shoulders and her suitcase at her feet. Alex stared at her phone, which displayed that famous number, the number she was supposed to call.
She wondered if it would be easier if she ran away ? Or maybe she could hide in the Outer Banks, so that everyone would forget about her and she would never see even one member of her so-called "family"again ?
What Alex hated most about the whole thing was that it was forced on her. She didn't have a choice, she was only 16 years old, but it annoyed her to feel attached to or dependent on someone. She had always been on her own, at least most of her life, and this was not the time for that to change.
Alex huffed in frustration, she had to hold out until she came of age. And after that, she would be free. She promised herself that she would fulfill her long list of unfulfilled dreams and work hard for it, because "money doesn't grow on trees" and she knew it.
She could finally go on an adventure and travel the world with her camera - the one her grandmother had given her for her 14th birthday. The unknown had always fascinated and frightened her at the same time. Alex would then create an orphanage. She would also be part of an association helping women or fighting against racism and discrimination. And many other stars in her blue eyes.
She smiled as she thought back to all her childhood dreams before finally calling Valentina. "Hello?" a soft voice answered. The voice was beautiful, almost bewitching, nothing like Alex's rocky voice.
