All through the week Jack had been nice to others. He didn’t go out of his way to be extremely nice but he stopped being a jerk for the most of it. Girls started to notice this and I could see that some had already fallen head over heels for him. Well, it wasn’t hard not to since he already had the good looks and popularity.
The week went by fast and Friday came sooner than later. I still hadn’t made my mind up yet and I sat at home thinking. All day at school everyone was talking about the party and how it would be a blast. I didn’t really bother with parties. Parties lead to a lot of trouble and I already had enough in my life.
My phone rang and I looked at the screen to see who it was.
“Hello?” Max said.
“Hi Max. What are you up to? Why did you call?” I asked.
“I just had tea. I was wondering if you were going to the party tonight. I was just asking to know if I should pick you up or not. I didn’t know if you wanted to go so that’s why I’m asking,” he explained. I thought for awhile.
“Are you going?” I asked. If he were going then I might go.
I could hear the pause in the line. I bet Max was probably thinking of going or not. Sure he wanted to go but he didn’t want to offend me. “Err…I might but we can hang out somewhere else if you want?”
“No, I’ll go. We might as well see what’s the big fuss all about eh?”
“Are you sure, Maisie? We can always do something else.” I could hear the concern in his voice and I pictured his face all worried.
“Sure, come pick me up at 9.” I hung up before Max could say anything else. I knew he wanted to go and I didn’t want to deprive him of the fun.
I heard the front door open and I went downstairs. Mum came in with a bag full of groceries and I offered a hand. She smiled as we entered the kitchen and sat down on a chair. She looked at the receipt and a frown came upon her face.
She took out a small notebook and started jotting down some numbers. Our family had been going through a lot of problems including financially for the past couple of years. Mum had to start working too at the local diner and she managed the bills. I wanted to graduate high school and get into a good decent college so that I could find a great job to finally release Mum from all the work.
After she had tucked in the small notebook back in the drawer she got up to take the groceries out of the bag. I sat down and cupped my chin to hold my head up on the table. Mum walked over to the fridge and looked at me.
“Do you have any plans for tonight? Aren’t you going to go out?” she asked.
“Err…well, there’s this party tonight. I don’t know if I should go or not.”
“Why not?” she asked, pausing from her work.
“Well, nothing. Just because,” I said, not knowing what to say. She looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
