I was walking side by side with Maisie as she talked about the school project. I wasn’t really paying attention to what she was saying and I nodded every time she paused as if I had been listening all along. I looked to the school car park and a group of boys were gathered near a sports car.

“Max! Max! Are you listening to what I’m saying?” Maisie asked. I looked at her dumbfounded and stared wildly at her.

“Err…yeah I was! Go on,” I encouraged. She looked at me with a frown on her face and folded her arms.

“Right! If you were listening what did I say?” she challenged.

“You said…err…you were talking about…the school project!” I tried.

“What about the school project?” she sighed, her face sulking more and more by the second.

“That you think that…you’ll love doing it?” It turned out more of a question and Maisie rolled her eyes. I knew that was not the answer and I faked hurt as she slapped my arm.

She shook her head and stormed off. I followed silently behind. Maisie wasn’t one to be mad for long. She would probably forget everything in a few minutes. I trailed behind her as she walked towards my car.

Suddenly with no warning she stopped dead in her tracks. She was staring at the bunch of boys near the sports car as her head slowly turned to Clara who was walking past. I noticed the bunch of boys were mostly the school footballers. Jack who was captain of the football team elbowed his friend and looked over at Clara.

I knew that what was going to happen next wasn’t going to be a pleasant thing. Clara was a nice girl, she scored great grades for all her subject but she was a little big in the size department. Jack who was known to be a jerk would surely say something to Clara and soon enough he did.

“I like big butts and I cannot lie!” Jack sneered. The boys hooted and laughed. Clara looked up shocked as if realizing where she was and looked down in shame. “Hey Clara!” Jack shouted. Clara looked towards him and he continued, “Did your parents manage to get a bed big enough for you to sleep on?”

The boys started laughing and Tom high-fived Jack. Clara quickly grabbed her bag and tried to save the little dignity she had left. It made things worse as she tried to run away and made all her excess baggage shake more.

“Oh look! Godzilla has been sighted!” Jack shouted pointing to Clara. They all hooted and cheered as they watched Clara run off towards school.

I didn’t realize Maisie walking towards Jack and the rest of the team. Jack looked momentarily blurred and then smiled as he realized it was Maisie. Maisie stood in front of Jack and Jack patted the side of the sports car he was leaning on for Maisie. As fast as lightning she slapped Jack with such a force I could hear the touch of hand on skin. Jack looked shocked and he touched the corner of his lip to see if it was bleeding. He looked at her angrily but then let it go and smirked.

“I like my girls rough,” he said giving her a wink. I could see Maisie’s face turn into disgust. She then spat to his face.

“You’re a scum to the world.” This had pushed Jack’s limit as he stood up straight and lifted his hand up to slap her. I went just in time to stop him but I could see that Maisie was just staring at him as if daring him to do it like she wanted him to do it. “You might as well be a murderer.” Maisie whispered before she turned and left.

Jack spat to the floor and looked at her angrily. He was leaning on me trying to move past me but he didn’t give much effort and I knew as much of a jerk he was, he wouldn’t hit a girl. He pushed my shoulders as he turned and went inside the sports car and started the engine.

I turned around looking for Maisie but she was nowhere in sight. I walked back towards school and looked around wondering where she could be. I headed near the toilets and saw that she was sitting outside the girl’s toilet by the ramp.

She looked up at me and smiled as I came by and sat next to her.

“Are you ok?” I asked. She looked at me and nodded but her eyes told a whole different story. They were glazed and sad. She knew she couldn’t hold up the pretense any longer so she cupped her face into her palms. I could see a tear drop by her cheeks and I pulled her into a hug cooing and trying to soothe her.

There was a reason she did all that. It wasn’t only because of Clara but another reason which was because of Isabelle. Isabelle was Maisie’s younger sister who died two years ago when she was just 13. She had died from being anorexic.

Isabelle was a happy girl until one day she was called ugly by a boy in her class who had actually liked her but was embarrassed when people tormented him about it. He didn’t even really mean it. It was just to keep people of his back and he didn’t know it would lead Isabelle to being self destructive.

I stroked Maisie’s hair as she wept softly into my shirt. They had done everything together and to have lost a best friend and a sister was unimaginable. “She’s in a better place now. She’s much happier,” I said trying to calm her.

She looked up at me and wiped a tear off her cheeks. She tucked her hair behind her ears and looked into her bag. Her hair curtained her face as she looked down. It was light brown and straight, way past her shoulder. She pulled out a packet of tissues and took one out. She wiped her eyes carefully and tried to breathe normally. She then stared at me and pouted.

Maisie was a beautiful girl and everyone noticed. Her green eyes penetrated through me and I smiled at the face she had made. She breathed in one more time and let it go.

“Are you ok?” I asked.

“I am now,” she said smiling, her cherry red lips more full from the crying.

I got up and motioned for us to head home. She picked up her bag and wiped her nose. She then looked up and smiled as she linked arms with me and we headed to my car.
